The #Stayathome diaries #2

My years of reading dystopian novels have not prepared me for this.

I thought when my time came I would understand how to build alliances, topple the government but instead we’ve been asked to do this one thing.

Never before has saving humanity required so little from us…

Do nothing. Save the world.

Okay - so I know it's not quite that simple but holy shitballs people. If we would all get on board with one plan and stay home for 14-21 days we could get through this whole thing so much faster. And SAVE LIVES. Instead, this haphazard, only doing the right things after the fact and not all at once will have us here until Christmas.

Steps down from soapbox.

My new normal...

~ Kevin is working from home now and we are doing ok. He *goes to work* in the back room where his office is set up around 7am - 4 pm and only comes out for lunch. He used to text me when he was leaving work and he still does. So now, on my way means 30 seconds instead of 20 minutes lol

We seem to be handling this well so far.

~ I have never done less and eaten more. I am ALWAYS hungry. I have no idea why. Stress maybe? The thought that food might be harder to come by so my survival instincts are kicking in?

I just had lunch - a sandwich and fruit - and am counting down the minutes until I feel an appropriate amount of time has passed that I can have a donut.

Watching/Reading:

The Toys the Made Us on Netflix - this is such a fun, quick, bingeable series. It's also kind of hilarious. The My Little Pony ep was my favorite. Who new the toy industry was so cut throat?  There's also The Movies that Made Us with 4 eps.

I'm Not Okay With This on Netflix - Based on the graphic novel of the same name. Coming of age, awkward romance, combined with anger issues and burgeoning superpowers makes this strange little show oddly compelling. It's not good exactly but we couldn't stop watching either.

Blow the Man Down on Amazon Prime video - Moody, graphic, with dark humor this was a really interesting spin on the small town with big secrets trope. First of all - it's told almost exclusively through women, including a group of matriarchs. It Maine coast setting and gruesome murder plot have drawn comparisons to Fargo and it definitely seems to copy that movie at first but ends up taking some really interesting turns. I loved the ending! Let me know if you've watched it.

I'm reading The Perfect Escape by Suzanne Park (Goodreads) an adorable rom-com about an escape room that apparently based on reviews is neither a rom-com or about an escape room?? I think I have my expectations readjusted and am enjoying it so far.

My SIL and nieces sent us this and how cute is that??!!

So, how are you all doing? What are you doing/watching/reading/listening to?

What's your new normal or has been difficult for you to adjust to?

  1. Kevin is adorable texting you from down the hall. Hey, it's important to try and maintain parts of our "normal" lives. I liked The Perfect Escape. It was quite funny, but it was a little light on the romance. It's common for most YA books to lean more coming of age, but this was billed as a rom-com, and therein lies the problem. Regardless, I enjoyed it, and though the escape room portion is not huge, there is more escaping later in the book.

    1. I'm just happy we're not trying to strangle each other lol

I think (I hope) I'm mentally prepared for what the book isn't. I'm bummed because the rom-com/escape room element is exactly why I requested it (& I rarely request books these days) but it seems cute so far.

  3. The normal is not being able to go out and do things or even visit the family (my parents are high risk due to certain health issues they deal with) but I am a homebody and an introvert, so its not that bad. I feel for extroverts though, this is where its probably mentally and emotionally damaging for them. I know because my two sisters are extroverts, and its been such a struggle for them. I agree though if everyone in the country at the same time just stayed home for just two weeks even .....that would get us back to life again.

    1. Yeah extroverts must be having a rough time. I'm fine not talking to anyone lol I do miss the farmers market and all the spring events though. I love gardening and had plans for my new yard so that's a bummer.

  4. Sooo true. I saw a map of which states were doing what and it was SO haphazard. Like a big swath of states are doing the shelter in place or whatever, and some have just closed some businesses, and some are... doing nothing. I'm like... huh????

"am counting down the minutes until I feel an appropriate amount of time has passed that I can have a donut." lol right? I've been eating more too. It must be an at- home thing??

Okay Blow The Man Down sounds kinda good? The Maine setting and murder plot doesn't hurt. I've been trying to find something decent to watch at night so maybe I'll give it a shot...

Hang in there haha and have a good week!

    1. I've been home a lot here because I didn't have a job yet and then taking care of Fonzi and I never ate this much lol Now I'm STARVING all the time!

Let me know if you watch the movie! It starts kind of slow but they weave a lot of interesting elements together and the older women are like the mafia. lol

  5. Oh man I'm ready to kick some people right now. Or at least throw an iron at their faces for how reckless they're being. There was a woman with her two teens in tow at Wal Mart and I just wanted to shout at them to leave their kids at home!

I'm also over seeing all these high school seniors' sob stories about how they're sad about missing the final days of their senior year, or prom, or graduation. It's not important right now! Stop with the self pitying stories because I frankly don't care about that. I'm more moved by the elderly man who can't go visit his wife who is in a nursing home. That's what's real to me. Not some kids who are upset because they can't party.

And have you noticed how this situation has brought out some REALLY bitter people on social media? Good grief but they're just awful to others who they perceive as having more than them. Also, my city got an "F" in social distancing which is not surprising because they're stubborn as hell here. There's internet, it's not the dark ages people geez.

*puts down megaphone and takes a deep breath

I'm binge watching a few shows right now, Supernatural, and Person of Interest. Both good shows and they're keeping me busy. I picked up three review books that I've started, one is so-so right now and that's disappointing. But the second one I started is pretty good.

    1. We're being pretty good here but it's mind blowing watching people on the beach and crowd bars and all that. They fight and fight and then inevitably they have to enact a shutdown as the virus explodes. I'm not sure how many times govt's need to see this play out elsewhere before doing the right thing.

We're supposed to hit our peak in the next 2 weeks but I don't even know what that means anymore. It's not like we can go right back out after the peak.

  6. It is amazing that staying home and doing nothing can have such an impact for so many people now. So I am enjoying doing just that! Between my online classes, home workouts and yoga, reading, blogging, channel, time with family, writing... I am never bored! I do miss going out to read in parks or spending time with friends outdoors but I can wait until the pandemic is over no problem.

    1. It is hard to give up all those little things - like I love my food lol but seriously, if we all hunkered down at once - it's not that big of a deal especially when it means saving lives.

  7. "Do nothing, save the world." I like that. I hope someone is printing it on t-shirts!

I've found lockdown hard. It's so strange, I'm perfectly fine choosing to stay in when I have unlimited options to go out but the minute you tell me I HAVE to stay home I'm crawling out my skin desperate to do all the outside things.
But I stay home, and only go outside within the prescribed limits, because I'm not an ass. I HATE all the images of idiots romping around, having BBQs on the beach with their friends etc, like this is somekind of bloody holiday. They're making it harder on everyone. :(

I envy the views you have and the areas you can go walking... This is my life now. Pictures of outside places are my new favourite things, lol.

I'm with you on always wanting to eat things. I'm going to be the size of my house by the time we get out of this...

    1. I'm such an introvert and fine with staying home but I still enjoy doing non social things and was so looking forward to the farmers market and buying plants to design a new garden out here. I neeeeeeed flowers and it depresses me to have an empty yard or not be able to browse the garden centers.

It is pretty out here though and some days it's the only thing that gets me through.

  8. Right?! How hard is it to stay your ass at home? The reports of block parties, house parties, etc just make me ragey. Here in FL (around the Tampa area) police arrested a minister because he was encouraging all his congregation to gather at the church and wouldn't stop despite being warned. So he put everyone there - and everyone they came into contact with - at risk. Moron.

I am laughing at Kevin texting you that he's leaving the office because Robert does the same thing. :) Twenty seconds later he's walking into my office bragging about the lack of traffic. LOL

I am stress/boredom eating enough for a family of five. It's crazy. Tonight is our virtual WW meeting and I am strongly considering *not* weighing in. I simply do not want to know. Ha.

  9. My husband always works from a home office when not traveling, so that's not changed. I've set up an office in our bedroom, my kids each have desks in separate rooms... so we are all separated during the day - which is good. My daughter is binge watching Parks and Rec (I catch an episode or three here and there) and we are watching CHUCK together. I am struggling reading right now.

  10. Yes, I love that motto - do nothing. save the world. People really are ridiculous when it comes to following such simple rules. Like, stop gathering places!!! It's so frustrating.

I think it's adorable that Kevin texts "on my way" still. Gotta keep some routines right?? I'm trying to read more. I just started this MG novel Hello, Universe that is really good! I'm also watching Schitt's Creek for the first time. I'm about halfway through the second season - the episodes go quick! It's a good one; kind of odd, but makes me smile.

  11. That's sweet that he still texts. My husband is working out of the home still and I get the texts when he's on break. I used the get the 'on my way' ones until he started overtime hours and doesn't get home until after midnight.

I don't eat more than usual, but I do have to do all the tricks I have heard of to attempt a good night's sleep. Stress, like you said.

Cute Peeps care package.. We're going to do a porch drop for my MIL's birthday next weekend

  13. I love that Kevin still texts you when coming 'home' from 'work'! That is adorable! I think routine really helps in this lockdown. I'm getting up and going to bed at the same time, and filling my day with stuff and trying to eat a varied diet! My day hasn't really changed much to be honest but I'm not quite ready to read those apocalypse books again!

  14. Yes, do nothing, save the world!! My husband sent me a cute meme that said something like, "Finally, I can save the world by laying on my couch watching Netflix. I've got this!"

Love the idea of your husband texting you to let you know he's on his way ... from the back room. :-)

  15. I feel you, why can't people just... not suck? It's like everything else, they won't understand the severity of the situation until it impacts them personally, and then it's clearly too late. Ugh. So cute that your husband texts you from the "office"!

I gotta tell you, being confined alone with two kids... it's not something I'd recommend? I mean, it's just exhausting. They're so stir crazy, of course, as we all are, but Lena especially cannot entertain herself! I have lost my job (or rather, my job is shut down until whenever) and the kids' school "days" are more like school half hours, so we're kind of losing our minds 😂

    1. Oh I can't imagine doing this with children. My SIL's have teens so that isn't so bad. They mostly sulk in their rooms anyway lol

I'm so sorry about your job Shannon. I hope things get back to *normal* sooner rather than later.

  17. I'm in the minority and everyone is asking why I still eat Peeps(lol), but they really should be worried about how I love Cadbury Cream Eggs which I'm NOT supposed to have.(lol) A picture of that egg even made it to my Instagram page. Sadly, until something happens to someone a person knows, there is a tendency to not take things seriously. As an introvert masquerading as an extrovert, following the rules is pretty simple, but I imagine parents with small kids or even teens are pulling out their hair right about now. I'm sending some air hugs your way, and continue to be safe. How romantic is it that your hubby still texts you when he's done for the day?! Love it! Hugs, RO

  18. I'm high-fiving you mentally right now for that speech! Now that we're on lockdown, I've been eating so much chocolate around the house and reading so much that I'm getting sick of it (not really, but I now literally pause reading a book and run around the house trying to find something to clean)!

  19. You’d think all of us would be a little more prepared for this crazy world we’re in considering how much dystopian fiction there is and all of the films too. Yet, I can see how people turn against one another when the one thing we need to do, stay home, so many people are failing at. It’s so frustrating, isn’t it? Especially as I am struggling with living alone and I just want to see my family but can’t and the folks not listening may mean I will have to wait even longer to see them face to face. I’m the opposite of you when it comes to eating, I’m working 9-5 in the week so barely eat beyond my breakfast lunch and tea but when it comes to weekends I can’t stop snacking. I think when I have no work to occupy my mind the boredom of being stuck at home kicks in and I eat everything I can get my hands on. It’s an issue.

Ha ha. 🍜 We have TP in the stores now, but no bread the last two times my son shopped. I've been making biscuits, but it's not the same as a nice slice of bread. 🍞
