Review: Thirteen by Kelley Armstrong (Women of the Otherworld #13)

War is coming to the Otherworld. A sinister cult known as The Supernatural Liberation Movement is hell-bent on exposing the truth about supernaturals to the rest of the world. Their violent, ruthless plan has put everyone at risk: from werewolves to vampires, from witches to half-demons.

Savannah Levine - fiery and unpredictable - stands at the heart of the maelstrom. There is a new, dark magic inside her, granting her the power to summon spells of terrifying strength. But whether this magic is a gift or a curse, no one knows.

On the eve of battle, all the major players must come together in a last, desperate fight for survival - Elena and Clay; Adam and Savannah; Paige and Lucas; Jeremy and Jaime; Hope, Eve and more...They are fighting for lives.

They are fighting for their loved ones.

They are fighting for the Otherworld. ~ Goodreads

Review:
The thirteenth and final installment of the Otherworld series does not disappoint. Thirteen is non stop, high stakes action that brings many of the residents of the Otherworld back together for one last time. A few very unexpected characters too!

Told primarily from Savannah's first person POV, Armstrong also weaves in alternating third person POV's from several of the women from the Otherworld series and it flows smoothly. Mainly because the focus is still on our narrator, Savannah. She has been with us since the beginning and she finally comes full circle with her maturity and powers in this book. Even though she was raised by Paige and Lucas, she has formed relationships with all of the other characters over the years. They have all had a hand in shaping who Savannah is today so it makes sense when they all interact with her. It's also nice to catch glimpses of our favorite couples and characters knowing that this is the end.

One character I was pleased to see more of was Cassandra. I love her friendship with Savannah. I've always had a soft spot for her and since she never got her own book it's nice to get a little deeper into her story.

*MINOR SPOILER* (concerning the Savannah/Adam relationship)
One flaw for me was that I felt short changed in the romance department. I'm fine without the graphic sex scenes, although if I recall all of the other couples had far sexier books, however after waiting this long for Savannah and Adam to get together I wanted a little more than a fade to black. Again, I didn't need to know what body part was going where but I feel like I missed out on the intimacy of the transition from friends to lovers. Sadly, it felt more like a hook-up. We know how long Savannah has loved Adam but it would have been nice to hear his thoughts. It just felt off. They were sleeping together platonically just a few weeks ago and now they can't keep their hands off each other. Armstrong did take her time building up the relationship over three books but meh….I still feel cheated lol I'm hoping for a novella for them in the future to fill the gap.
*END SPOILER*

Other than that small complaint I would highly recommend this satisfying conclusion to one of my all time favorite paranormal series. Bitten was in fact my first werewolf story and one of the first paranormal I read so the addition of the bonus Elena POV short story; From Russia With Love was a nice bonus for long time fans.

Rating: 3.5 out of 4 Incredible series with a satisfying conclusion. Kelley Armstrong managed to stay at the top her game for thirteen books (& many novellas). An amazing feat for any author.

    2. I actually wasn't bummed about the lack of sex scene. I'm not really a Savannah/Adam fan. I've known they were coming for a while now. But even then, it still seemed out of nowhere. It just didn't seem natural. They didn't have the same kind of build up as Jaime and Jeremy. It's not that I dislike them together, I just don't really care about that one way or another. But as characters I like them both. : )

I feel like I need to re-read this now.

  5. I haven't read the books in a while, I didn't finish the series, (all but the last couple.) I was meaning to do a massive re-read now that the end is here. It is sad, I really did enjoy this world so much. Clay and Elena are some of my favs, I really enjoyed Angelic.

  14. I can't believe it's the end of an era and Kelley Armstrong's series came to an end :-(

My favourite books so far are Bitten and Becoming, and my least favourite character is Savannah (though I only read until Book 6 or 7), but I find her irritating. grr

Thanks so much for the giveaway Karen! :-)
