TGIF at GReads

This feature is hosted by GReads on Fridays to re-cap the week's posts & to propose a question for followers.

Question: Supporting Characters: We tend to gush over those main characters the most, but what about those supporting roles? Who are some of your favorites?

I was excited when Ginger let me know what the question was for this week. I love supporting characters and they always seem to get short changed unless it’s a series that changes main characters with each book.

Myra McEntire’s Hourglass series is a good example of that but it was unexpected, If you’ve read Hourglass you would know that this series is all about Em & Michael. Or is it?

For one Kaleb almost steals the show in Hourglass with his hot, broody self. But the character that really grabbed my attention was Em’s best friend Lily.

Myra could have went the traditional YA love triangle route with the series. It’s there in Hourglass between Em/Michael/Kaleb but oh noooo. She turns the whole series on it’s head and has Kaleb narrating Timepiece. I didn’t even think it was possible given how important Em is. Turns out EVERYONE is important in this series which brings me back to Lily.
I love that girl and while she’s not a main character per say, she’s front and center in Timepiece and I could not be happier she wasn’t relegated to the supporting BFF role.

Another series where I love the supporting characters almost more than the main heroine is Ilona Andrews Kate Daniel’s series. I adore Curran - The Beast Lord/ Tiger shifter & Kate's mate. I wish the books were narrated by him or at the very least alternating POV’s but I guess we have to settle for the few Curran POV scenes that Gordon (half of the Ilona Andrews writing duo) releases a few times a year. (Thank you!!!)
I also love Derek and Julie, two teenagers, that we've been able to see mature over the course of series. It’s hard to pull off writing teenagers period but Andrews’ manages it with TWO of them. I’m always clamoring for more of them and the whole pack really. All the characters from this series are multi-dimensional.

And finally my favorite supporting character of late… Jupe Butler from Jenn Bennett's Arcadia Bell series. I defy you not to love this character. The irrepressible, hyperactive, movie obsessed, absolutely huggable teenage son of Lon Butler. He’s just…. Jupe. I can’t explain it – you just have to read the series to understand my Jupe obsession. My review

I usually do my re-cap on Sunday’s but here’s a link for yesterday’s post – just some silly videos to hopefully make you laugh.

Happy TGIF!

TGIF is hosted by GReads! to re-cap the week's post and propose a question to followers.

The question this week is: Reading Challenges: Did you sign up for any this year? How has your progression been? This question makes me feel like a loser. I seem to be Reading Challenge.....well..... challenged.
Put a challenge in front of me and I crumble. Last year I read almost 90% YA debut authors....about 50% of those books were contemporary so I signed up for The Story Siren's YA Debut Author and the Undercover Book Lover's YA Contemporary reading challenges.
The new year rolls around, I have all the books on my shelf and for some reason I don't feel like reading them. By June I had read only three YA's, none by debut authors and only one contemporary.
Total challenge fail.
So I switched tactics and signed up for the Goodreads reading challenge and picked 100 books as my goal for the year. I'm still about 20 books behind but mostly because I hadn't been adding every book I had read for the year. In reality I'm on or ahead of my target so far.
Once I stopped worrying about the challenge, low and behold I have read several YA debut authors and YA contemporaries!
I either crack under pressure or don't like being told what to read. (It's both) I am not one of those people who does well with lists and goals so I don't think challenges are the right fit for me. Not that I'll give up on them though.

How about you? Do you like challenges? Do you ever meet your goals?

Happy TGIF!

TGIF is a weekly feature hosted by GReads! to re-cap the week's posts & to propose a question for followers.

Book Disappointments: Have you ever come across a book you were so stoked to read, but it failed miserably in your eyes?
Mockingjay. That book disappointed me so much that I spiraled into a reading slump lasting almost 5 months. Plus I live in fear of ALL trilogies. It takes a lot to make me pick up a new series now and I would rather wait until all of the books are out and read them together then so I can see how other people are feeling about the series ending.
I didn't really have a lot of expectations for what Mockingjay should or would be. I was just waiting to be blown away. The last book felt so disconnected from the previous two and Suzanne Collins writing style seemed different to me. Almost like she had a different agenda. I would have enjoyed the book as a stand alone anti-war novel, but as the conclusion of my beloved series and as a goodbye to some of my favorite characters it crushed me.

My posts for the week:

Have a great weekend everyone!

TGIF!

TGIF is hosted by GReads! to re-cap the week's posts & to propose a question for followers.

This weeks question is: Books to Television: Which books would you love to see made in to a tv series? or movie?

You will be STUNNED at what I pick. NOT.... lol Yes, of course it's something written by Jeri Smith-Ready. Every time I watch any vampire movie or TV show I always wish they would make a TV series based on Jeri's WVMP Radio Vampire Series. The series is about a radio station run by several vampires DJ's whose minds and musical tastes are stuck in the time they were turned. Con artist Ciara Griffin finds herself trying to reform her conning ways to save the radio station while protecting her new friends secret.
The story lines would be endless and a blast to watch. You have the music which is integral to the series (WIN!), there are several vampires from different decades to spotlight for variety and we have the super sexy and complex relationship of Ciara and Shane.
The series is dark, snarky, fun, scary and sexy......the perfect mix for a TV show. (HBO or cable please - need to be able to show everything!)

Enclave

My other pick would be Enclave by Ann Aguirre. When I read this book I felt like I was in a movie. I could visualize the entire thing and felt like I was there so I think it would be a perfect choice.
