For What It's Worth

Hello, hello!

I was sort of back on a semi-regular blogger roll and well...I'm not now lol

My reading fell off again and then we had visitors last week. My niece came in on a Monday, followed by my SIL on a Thursday.

I had THE BEST time with my niece! She is the sweetest person and loves books, food, baking and the animals. We spent the week going through old cookbooks, baking pie (she taught me how to make pie crust), doing puzzles, visiting bookstores, Asian markets, and watched horror movies.

Then when my SIL arrived Kevin took her hiking and we all went to the farmers market, Japanese Gardens and Powell's Bookstore.

I'm exhausted and need to introvert for the next month to recover but it was a nice visit.

Here are a few pics because I have read nothing.

This is the apple blueberry pie we baked. We had extra dough and my niece stuffed it with a tiny piece of apple and a blueberry, plopped it in the center - we called it pie inception lol - but I had no idea it made the pie (with the venting holes) look like a face with a nose until I took an overhead picture 🤣

the top crust of a pie with three slits in a circular pattern and a small knob of pie crust int he center - making it look like a face

I baked bread that was GORGEOUS

But....because social media doesn't show the other, non perfect, side of life - the crust softened, so I popped it back in before it finished pre-heating - forgetting I have a gas oven and....

Baked artisan bread loaf that is burned black on the top

I had to slice the top off but it still tasted great ha!

And finally, here is a picture of the tea service we had at the Japanese Garden in Portland. We were able to get an outside seat near the tree tops that overlook the gardens. So pretty and relaxing.

Welp, that's it for now. I'm so far behind in visiting blogs and saying hi so I hope to get to it this week. I hope everyone is doing ok and enjoying fall!

    1. LOVE fresh baked bread. I may have ruined the esthetic but it was still delicious lol I love the garden. We got an annual pass because it's so relaxing to walk through and it looks different throughout the seasons.

We have so many Asian markets out here but the big ones are Uwajimaya and H-Mart

  2. I commend you on two visitors back to back. I am not sure I could handle it. Sorry the break didn't reheat as planned, but at least you have the glamour shot. Your pie looks fantastic too!

    1. Well it was my niece coming on a Monday and her mom joining us on the Thursday. They both left Sunday. We had a great time but I needed several days on introverting time after lol

The pie was SO good and hopefully I can now make pie crust on my own.

  3. Yeah I set off the smoke alarm regularly. I'm not a terrible cook just multi-tasking...

  4. It's been forever since I made a pie and yours looks so good. The bread was still a win so that's good. I'm glad you had a good time with your family.

    1. I am not good at baking, especially pie, so I got in some practice while she was here.

  5. I'm envious of your baking skills, even with the extra crisp top of that bread! I'm a cook, so by my very nature having to follow an exact recipe doesn't work for me. You can't just use intuition to bake haha

    1. I'm not great at any kind of cooking or baking lol but I'm passable. I have a bread machine, so I usually do the dough in there, then shape/ finish in the oven.

A match made in heaven! I'm glad you both had a great time - for more than one reason...

I had to chuckle at your "because social media doesn't show the other, non perfect, side of life". Well, at least the bread made for a first great picture!

I just noticed your "Braains" icon hahaha.

    1. We've been busy, but (mostly) in a good way. But I'm all about chill so here's hoping we both have a calmer November.

  10. What a great visit with your niece! I have one niece who is 15 and our visits are fun but she's still very much immersed in teenage/high school drama so it's a different vibe. LOL

    1. I have several nieces and a few are all (fun but) teen drama lol - this one isn't so much. But she just started college.

  11. I've been seeing a lot of blueberry/apple pies over the last couple of years, but in my head I'm not quite sold on the flavor combo. Is it good? 🤔

The bread was beautiful, at least you have the photo. 😁 The taste is what counts, though, so you nailed it. 😎

I'm happy you had some great family time. 🤗

    1. It was surprisingly good. We were going for straight apple but Kevin wanted a blueberry pie and ended up finding a recipe for blueberry apple lol

Yeah - the bread was still delicious!
