Tell Me Something Tuesday: Do you like buddy/group reads or are you a reading loner?

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general.

It is co-hosted by (Linda from Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell, Roberta from Offbeat YA, Jen from That’s What I’m Talking About, Berl's from Because Reading is Better than Real Life  and me)

Question: Do you like to read with others (buddy reads, read-a-longs, bookclubs, etc)?

Answer: Sort of? I love being able to, honestly, discuss a book with a friend but I've never been part of a book club.

The Oprah/Reese type of book clubs usually pick books that don't interest me - Something Bad Happens: A novel.

And author/fan group reads are usually - you must be positive - affairs and I'd rather be free to talk about pros and cons so those aren't for me.

I'm a mood reader and (usually - not anymore lol) read fast so buddy reads don't often happen.

As close as I get is talking about books after reading with a friend who has read the book, which I do a lot and love!!

Do you like buddy/group reads?

  1. I tried to do this once, but our reading rates were so different. I have discussed post book, and that's always fun.

  2. We have a buddy read on the blog, I love getting together and discussing books. I am a slow reader, and the other girl on the blog is a fast reader. so we divide it up to give everyone time to read. The first half of the book we discuss on a certain date and if you are not there yet you can pass, the last hallf of the book we discuss at the end of the month, giving everyone time to read around obligations or at their oen pace

    1. That's a good way for you all to keep pace and be able to discuss!

  3. I like book clubs, because you can read as quick/slow as you want as long as you're finished by the meeting. I'm in two and they are a lot of fun. One is YA For Adults and it's through my library, and my sister is in that one with me. The other is one with a small group of friends and we all take turns choosing a book so it's not always a win, but I have read some books that I wouldn't have checked out otherwise which is nice!

    1. I didn't really think about other genre type book clubs. I've only seen the fan type ones or with serious books.

I'm always a little wary to talk to people I don't know well about books because I like to get to the nitty gritty and talk about good and bad and not everyone wants that when they love something.

  4. I think buddy reads and read-a longs are fun, and I like the idea of a bookclub (physical or online) but have never really done one. Same here about being a mood reader, which makes an actual book club kinda hard lol. I've had some fun read- a-longs with bloggers though since I started blogging!

    1. If I found someone reading compatible, it might be fun. But my tastes and reading pace make it hard.

I usually end up discussing it after with someone else who read it to compare notes.

    2. If you ever want to buddy read a book let me know. I was commenting on that over at Roberta's too. It would be super low key of course... I think we're all kinda low key that way. :)

    3. That would be great! I'll see if our book interests ever overlap.

And we're both on a reading mood at the same time lol

  5. I was part of a book club years ago. We'd discuss the books once everyone read it. It got awkward when everyone would gush over a book that I didn't care for at all. LOL. I wouldn't mind being part of a book club again, though.

    1. THAT'S what I'm afraid of lol I'm one of those nit picky types. I can love a book but still want to break it down.

  6. And that is why I do like blogging, cos I do get to share books with people :)

  7. "Bark Back in the Comments" LOL.

"And author/fan group reads are usually - you must be positive - affairs and I'd rather be free to talk about pros and cons so those aren't for me." "I can love a book but still want to break it down."
I agree. That's why you need the right person/people to do buddy reads and the likes. Plus someone who's willing to read at your own pace, or you at theirs.

    1. I have a few friends that I deep dive into discussions with but usually we have recommended the book to each other so we're not reading at the same time but talking after.

I think Kit and I sort of buddy read a book but we read at different paces so we didn't talk until the end anyway.

But it's always fun to discuss a book!

  8. I enjoy talking about a book without someone who has also read it. That's always fun. But that's about the extent of it. Buddy reads always sound fun in theory, but I end up feeling pressure to read quickly. Which distracts from the reading experience. I tend to read slowly and others read so much faster, so they've finished the book and want to chat and move on while I'll still reading. So, not really for me.

  9. Could not agree more! Like- when I want to talk about a book, I don't want to sugarcoat it! Also cackling at "Something Bad Happens: A novel" because YES my goodness yes! I am also bad at proper timing when trying to read in sync with others, so yep, like you said, I am down for reading and then discussions, but it is not going to happen in a simultaneous way, more likely than not.

    1. Lol yeah, I'm not good at group anything. Even reading haha

  10. It depends on the group and the buddy. 😅

We had a group for reading the Becky Chamber's Wayfarer series (me, Greg, Annemieke, Jolene who used to have a blog, and sometimes Heather from Random Redheaded Ramblings. It was a great group, so it's sad that series is finished. I've been doing group reads with Annemieke's Discworld group on Goodreads; it's very low-key, though. I've never participated in a book club; online or IRL.📚

I buddy read with my son a lot. I used to with Greg, Annemieke, and Jolene, but we all seem to be not wanting to read similar books lately. 😊

    1. In the past, I read too fast. Now I read too slow lol

And I'm also reading books that aren't really on anyone's radar lately - or were recommended by friends so they already read it.

  11. I remember we talked about a book once or twice. I don't like the pressure of scheduled buddy reads, but I agree discussing afterward is fun!

  12. I've tried book clubs but suck at reading the selected books because I'm too much of a mood reader. I've never tried buddy-reading but I imagine I'd suck at that too because of different reading paces, moody-readerness, and I don't think I really understand the "why" of buddy-reading, lol. :)
