Twenty-one in 2021

This is not so much a GOAL as it is a starting point. I've spent the past few years working on my physical TBR pile. I believe it started somewhere around 190-ish, then got down to 140-ish before my move where I had to brutally whittle it down. In 2020 it was at 63 and is currently at 58. Not too bad.

To break it down further, I decided to concentrate on choosing 21 (for obvious reasons) books that I hope to clear out this year.

I'm not going to link to them or describe each one but here are a few notes on why I picked a few:

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - I've been stuck at page 46 since this book came out years ago. I even bought the special deluxe boxed set when it came out but just couldn't get into CK the way I did Six of Crows

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam - I'm almost done with this one. My audiobook expired from the library so I'll finish with my HC.

Little Lion and The Revolution of Birdie Rudolph by Brandy Colbert - I'm a little irritated I haven't read these yet. I love Colbert and have had these on my shelf for too long already.

Nerve by Jeanne Ryan - I have an annotated copy so it should make it a fun read.

Wow, No Thank You by Samantha Irby - I've been enjoying more non-fiction and this one has humor and I love humor.

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby - I'm a little intimidated by this one because it's magical realism and I don't always do well with that genre but it has RAVE reviews and has been on my shelf for years.

Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews - I need to catch up with and finish the Kate Daniels series already!!

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah - I've been dying to read this one but, honestly, I wanted to listen to it on audio but my library/hoopla doesn't have it. I caved and bough the book last year but the print is SO TINY!

Have you read any of these? Are there any I should move up/down the list?

  1. I read a bunch of these, and they were all great. I think 21 is a good goal. All your physical books could be sort of overwhelming, but some of them gives you wiggle room to read other books too

    1. Exactly. I'm a mood reader so a plan doesn't really work for me but this is a good starting point to work from.

  2. Magic Binds won't be a hardship to get through as well 😜 This is such a great series, that it would be a shame not to get past it. I can't recognize anything else on this list. Good luck, Karen!

    1. My reading has been so bad that I haven't kept up with anything. It's a series I love though.

  3. Well, I'm going to push hard for Kate (Magic Binds) That series is so phenomenal. But then you will want to read more after that!

  4. I really have enjoyed the Kate Daniels series, so I hope Magic Binds is a winner for you. This is a great goal to have for the year and a lovely group of books here.

  5. Hope these are good. I still have Six of crows to read, crooked is on my shelf (won it in a giveaway) but I got sidetracked. Nerve was decent if I remember right. That's the one they made into a move, right? I think Machine gun Kelly was in it. :)

    1. I LOVED SoC's but CK was not at all what I was expecting so I set it aside for...years lol

I didn't know that about Nerve!

  6. I could do with a plan like this to tackle what my upcoming reads are. I just never know how my reading mood will go at the moment!

    1. Yeah - this is not some kind of must read list. I can't do that because I'm a mood reader too.

  7. YOU HAVEN'T READ BORN A CRIME YET??

    That's a crime.

    I'll see myself out.

  8. How cool to have an annotated book. That has to make for a fun reading experience.
Born a Crime is one that stays on my radar but somehow never gets read. *walks away in shame*

    1. I cleaned up my Kindle a few years ago. I have maybe 50 but anything I download now, I usually read within the month.

  11. I actually didn't love the Six of Crows duology, so I identify with that. XD I've heard great things about Bone Gap!

    1. The second book feels like it should have been the first one and I was so bored by it. Thought it might be a mood thing so I set it aside.

  12. I just bought Trevor Noah's book when it was a Kindle deal, I am hoping to read it soon. I think the only one on your list I have read is Crooked Kingdom, actually! I happened to like it better than Six of Crows, if that helps (I didn't *love* SoC though, so yeah). I also feel the exact same way about Bone Gap. I did love the author's most recent book, which makes me really want to try! Good luck with these, I am so impressed with your appropriate bookshelves 😂

    1. HA! It's easier to organize when your down to fewer books lol

I LOVED SoC and I was so obsessed waiting for CK which is weird for me so it was super disappointing to not love it immediately. So I ended up setting it aside. For years lol

  13. I read Bone Gap and didn't like it. It's not that I don't like odd books because I usually like them when other readers don't. It's just that too much of it was weird just to be weird, with no substance to it. One of my film professors called it between-the-legs art as opposed to over-your-head; where the artist is trying to fool you into thinking it's intellectual when it's not. 😅

I need to read Born a Crime, too. I've had the audiobook on my Kindle forever. 😯

  14. You know how much I love the Kate Daniels series! I'm hoping to re-read that one at somepoint this year. :)
Good luck getting through your 21.
