Question: Resolutions/words of the year – do you do them? What are they for 2021?

Answer: I don't do resolutions because I can never keep them and it makes me feel pressured.

Starting several years ago, I started doing a word or phrase that kind of put me in a frame of mind to guide me through the year.

Some of my past words have been disconnect, laugh, simplify, joy.

I knew what my phrase for this year would be as soon as I heard when I was watching Queen's Gambit (great show btw) a few months ago.

I spent most of 2020 feeling completely out of sorts and drained. As I'm sure applies to 99.9999999% of the population. So this phrase struck a chord and here it is....

My tranquility needs to be refurbished

I laughed so hard when I heard that but also YES. My tranquility needs to be refurbished! Ha! I'm not sure how it's even possible in our current climate but I know I need to make time for tranquility and quiet and do more of the things that make me happy - even if they don't look like they used to.

You know that (overused) line - "I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding."? That....I want to let out that breath that I feel like I'm always holding, waiting for the next (or yet another) shoe to drop. Life always feels like it's right on the precipice of disaster.

So more puppy time, more hikes, more eating lol, more trying new things. Less social media, less noise.

Do you have a resolution, word or phrase for this year?

  1. *HUGS* if there is anything I can do to help you refurbish your tranquility, please let me know. I'm here for you, even though I'm on the other side of the country.

    1. I'm actually handling things fairly well. Especially since the puppies. It's just that constant state of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Like waking up in the morning is scary. You have no idea if something horrible happened (again) overnight.

      Thank you Jen xoxo

  2. I'm the same with resolutions. I'll break them anyway so why bother lol?

Tranquility is good. :) I'm going to try for that this year too!

    1. Giving me a resolution is like saying - DON'T DO THIS THING lol

  3. I like that. Good luck with renewing your tranquility. I think it's good to have goals, but like you said, there's that extra pressure when you declare a resolution. It's not so much trying to keep it for me, but rather, how I feel when I fail.

    1. Yeah and I think some people do better with concrete goals. Just not me lol Whatever works is great!

      Happy New Year Sam!

  4. I've actually been pretty solid on my resolutions the last couple of years -- except when it comes to blogging. Ha. Anyway, not sure when "refurbishing tranquility" means, but I think I need one first before I can refurbish anything. Lol.

    1. My words and phrases are more of a mood to guide me through the year than anything concrete. Which I would fail at lol

  5. My tranquility needs to be refurbished. Wow, what a powerful statement. And I feel that. Working from home has helped along those lines for me. Blogging less has helped. Even less social media than before (and it was minimal at best). Here's to more tranquility in 2021.

  7. Oh I adore that phrase. I need to borrow it! So perfect for this year - we really do have some tranquility to refurbish! I hope you're able to do that this year - that we all are!

    1. Yeah - that's the problem right? There's no tranquility but I'm going to make some lol

  8. I think finding tranquility in this world of chaos is paramount and much needed for all of us. I hope you find all the peace and joy you deserve and that 2021 is a year of returns for you and yours.

  9. I love this! I think we all could use more tranquility and quiet. I do want to keep finding time for reading. It was kind of hit or miss last year. I want to cuddle with my cat. I want to keep dancing.

    1. Yes, I want to drown out some of the noise. I don't even read or watch much of it but that constant state of...what awful thing is going to happen next? is always there.

  10. I like that phrase! I could do with simplifying things... Throwing out the chaos and dropping the things that make me unhappy and spend more time focusing on things that bring calm and peace.

I hope you manage to refurbish your tranquillity!

    1. Simplify was my word a few years ago and it helped me a lot!

  11. If you have the means to do that, go for it! My tranquility couldn't be refurbished if I tried, because there are too many things in my life that I can't afford to let go - things it's not up to me to. As for social media, they are good for me, because apparently I've been lucky (or picky) so far - except once, and it wasn't something that occurred in our bookish circle. But if they stress you, I'm sure staying away from them will make you a happier person! I notice when you're not online, but from now on, I'll assume you're busy with puppies and hiking and happy things and won't worry 😉.

  12. Good post with good words. We've all been rocked by a chaotic year and are struggling to find our footing. My mantra for this year is poise. Finding the place where we've balanced the good and bad in life.

  13. My phrase for the year is unrepeatable! It involves several expletives! I pretty much avoid resolutions except 'get more done' when it comes to all my current tasks!
