Question: If you could do something in the bookish world for employment, what would you choose and why?

Answer: I have a very party pooper answer lol I wouldn’t want a bookish career.

In the past, having a career in something I loved ruined it for me.

I love animals but working in shelters and at veterinarians exposed the dark side of it all and destroyed any joy for it that I had. I, of course, had great experiences too but it took years for me to just be able to enjoy having fun with animals and even remotely like people again alter the things I saw.

Same with blogging. I don’t regret all the fun opportunities I’ve had through blogging, but knowing more of the ugly details in publishing and the truth about some authors took some joy out of it.

I guess if I could be on my own – like just solitarily sorting through books or something, I would do that.

What bookish dream career would you like to do if you could?

    1. It's just happened before with things I've loved lol

  2. I agree with you to some extent. When your hobby becomes a job it could become burdensome. I would love to be a children's librarian myself.

    1. I'm such an introvert so that eliminates a lot of things too lol

  3. I kind of have a bookish career. I'm also applying for a library program (like three courses) so I guess I'll always have books somewhere in the periphery. I get what you mean about keeping your hobbies and work separate. I would never work in publishing because of that.

    1. Some things you can't unsee/unknow and I don't want to go there lol

  4. I often wonder if I'd like being a librarian, or being in publishing or whatever. Not sure. :) I'm sure it's not as awesome as it sounds haha. And I hear you on the animals thing- I can imagine you would get disenchanted, seeing all the bad things that can happen.

    1. I could barely have fun with my own pets by the time I left shelter work. And I HATED people.

  5. I get what you mean. I'm an academic librarian, though I would love to work in a public library and do programs. That would be really fun, and as a librarian, you're still kind of a fan first than anything else. Working in my own little bookstore would be kind of lovely too though.

  6. Yep, totally agree with you on this one. I see people say all the time "Oh, I would love to work in a bookstore/own my own book shop." Not me. I have no doubt that mixing my job and my hobby would suck the joy out of reading. And no way do I want to risk losing that.

    1. I see a lot of librarians and bookish jobs people (even authors!) who have no time to read.

  7. If I had to choose anything, it would be a small bookstore owner is some quaint small town somewhere. I think if I made money through blogging, it would take the fun out of it.

  8. Totally respect and understand your answer. That's why I want to do something like decorate a book story or library displays... Nothing too in depth and keeping most of the responsibility off of me!

    1. It would really have to be something that really keeps me away from the nitty gritty of it all lol

  9. I do get it, being too close can absolutely change how you feel about something!

    1. Just blogging and reviewing has taken some of the joy out of reading so a career seems even worse lol

  10. I can't see me having a bookish career. I hate kids so working in a library is out for sure! I hate answering phones too which could be an issue with most jobs and I'm not enjoying book reading deadlines these days!

    1. The people are what ruined working with animals for me so anything that involved people would just ruin a bookish career too even though it's different in a lot of ways.

  11. "In the past, having a career in something I loved ruined it for me."
That's what happened with me and radio. Blogging is a great way to engage with books without getting "too close" or have commitments. Then again, I'm sure that I would enjoy being a copy editor if I should choose a bookish career. I would be involved but still working from my secluded lair LOL.

    "solitarily sorting through books".
I can't figure what kind of job would require you to do that LOL.

    1. You'd make a great copy editor!! I enjoy beta reading but I wouldn't like it as a career because you have to read something you might not be in the mood for on a schedule.

I'd want to do something like stock shelves and maybe recommend books but I don't want to have anything to do with the inner workings of the industry lol I already know to much and it hurt my reading.

  12. I would love to be a writer. I write now, but basically for my own pleasure. I might do some installment type stories on the blog soon, but I have never seriously considered looking to be published. 😊

  13. I'd love too have a bookshop, I think. Problem is, I have no idea how it would be possible to make my "dream" bookshop happen and make it viable... Indie bookstores barely stand a chance these days. :(
