Question: Comfort foods and comfort reads. Now that the weather is getting cooler, share some of yours.

Answer: Cold winters are new to me (after almost 30 years in FL – now living in WA state) so cold weather comfort meals are somewhat new to me. In FL. Winters used to me mean strawberry, citrus and farmers market season - the exact opposite of comfort food.

But if I must adapt to colder weather - there's no better way than through soups and stews.

I’ve become a huge fan of my Instant Pot and our absolute favorite meal is this Chicken and Dumpling recipe from Dessert for two. I double all the ingredients and make it in my 6qt pot instead of the 3qt she uses and reheat any leftovers with a new batch of dumplings the next day.

A new favorite (also from Dessert for Two) is her Instant Pot Beef Stroganoff recipe. Everything, including the noodles, is cooked in one pot.

Veggie noodle & pea soup are favorite standby’s too. Again, the Instant Pot is my secret weapon. Just toss everything in and it’s ready in under 10 minutes.

And, of course, bread - any kind of warm bread! I just ordered a bread machine and I'm looking forward to whipping up a loaf at any time!

As for non stew/soup comfort foods – I love warm cider with caramel drizzle from the local coffee shop. I haven’t had it yet this fall, but the cold, rainy weather has already started so I expect to get there soon. We always grab one and a biscotti to take for our walk by the water.

Comfort Reads: Honestly, I just read whatever but I will always feel most comforted by a sweet romance

Do you have a cold weather comfort food or read?

  1. Yum! I grew up in the northeast and have always been a soup lover, but my favorite comfort foods are the things my grandmother cooked for me - dampfnudel, red and white cabbage, linzer cookies, and kenadles.

    1. I don't know any of those things - I'll have to look them up.
Kevin's grandmother used to make stuffed cabbage rolls, molasses cookies and lemon bars so those all bring back good memories

  2. OMG... I haven't had a good stroganoff in YEARS! Now I must search out a recipe and make some. That sounds perfect for cool evenings!

    1. That's a favorite of my husband's but this was the first time I tried making it in the IP

  3. I like soups but am helpless making them. Back when we went to restaurants, I'd order creamy chowders and bisques.

    1. Once I mastered a good chicken noodle soup recipe I realized it was just a matter of swapping out ingredients but the Instant Pot is the real game changer for me. Especially with the dumplings. I could never do them on the stove top.

  4. The stroganoff sounds divine. I've yet to get an Instant Pot. They intimidate me. LOL Hot cider... yum. And hot chocolate, of course. My comfort food tends to be anything with potatoes. A big bowl of creamy mashed potatoes is the ultimate comfort food for me.

    1. It used to scare me too but they have made it sort of (mostly) idiot proof and I have not endangered my life yet lol

I'm a potato fan too but it's more them fried for me. Although I do love mashed potatoes.

  5. I love a good soup or stew, for sure. In fact I'm thinking of making a pot of spicy chili... mmm. :)

    Bread too- love crusty bread.

    1. I can't have spicy (or tomato) chili anymore :-(. I've been searching for white chili recipes.
And I just got a bread machine so I can't wait to try that.

  6. I LOVE SOUP! I made a good chicken soup the other week with turmeric and Israeli pearls. I'll have to check out the chicken and dumplings but I'm afraid the texture will be too much for Matt.

    1. Oooh that soup sounds delicious. I love the pearls. I made it last week with a tumeric pasta.

I had never had dumplings before. I thought the would be gross but I'm obsessed lol but I love anything bread or doughy.

  7. I don't really switch up my meals depending on the weather - I just eat warm meals all year through because I am generally a warm person. But that chicken and dumpling meal sounds wonderful! We don't eat soup much at all at home and it seems like that should be something I change...

    1. I ate the chicken and dumplings all summer lol

FL was a little different because it gets soooo hot that you can't eat warm foods and it's horrible cooking and adding heat to the kitchen.

  8. Haha, and I went with chocolate. Well I'd eat it all day long.

I do like your comfort food, I wonder why I do not have a real one

  9. I get to turn my oven on in the Winter time. Because during the Summer, the oven is off limit. It's 118f during the Summer and even with the AC, it's just not cool enough to turn the oven on. So during the Winter I can make casseroles, roasts, bake some cakes, and biscuits.

  10. Oh, that chicken and dumpling soup looks amazing! I'm down in the Florida winter (well, upcoming winter) still and I don't envy the cold! I'm glad you're at least a good cook so you can eat all the warm comfort food! XD

  11. Grilled cheese and tomato soup. We also like to make food over the fire pit! I forget what they're called, but you basically stuff a ton of stuff in foil (potatoes, tofu, carrots, etc.) along with whatever spices and condiments you want, and then let it cook. We usually empty ours into bowls of rice and eat.

    1. I can't have tomatoes anymore but that used to be my favorite soup and I LOVE grilled cheese.

Cool idea! I don't dot he packets but I roast a pile of veggies and throw it on rice or quinoa.

  12. When cold autumn days start, I'm there either with a mug of frothy hot chocolate or bit pots of home made soup! With the constant colder temperatures now, I'll be started on the soup this week. It's always hot meals for winter-casseroles, pasta, warm and filling things!

    1. It's been so cold and rainy already here so we've been eating lots of soup/casseroles.

  13. Oh man I WISH it got that cold here! I love soups but don't get to have them that often cause it's hot! My mom makes a mean meatball soup (Mexican style) that I just love. I also love potato soup and veggie soup too. It's hard to find a good veggie soup though.

    1. I'm having a bit of shock here this year.

Last year stayed relatively nice until November but we're getting down into the 20's this weekend and I am not ready lol

I bought a bread machine though so I'm going all in on comfort food!

  14. Those chicken and dumplings look delicious! I've never had cider with caramel, that sounds delicious too.

  15. Yes, soup! I usually say it's soup weather rather than sweater weather. Ha ha. 🍲

Pressure cookers still scare me. 😯
