The Friday 5

It’s been awhile since I’ve recapped what I’ve been watching so here we go!

Russian Doll – Netflix

Nadia keeps dying and reliving her 36th birthday party. She's trapped in a surreal time loop -- and staring down the barrel of her own mortality.

I didn’t immediately love this show but after the 3rd episode I was all in. It’s trippy, funny, clever and poignant. And it’s one of the few shows set in NYC that actually looks like NYC.

The Boys – Amazon Prime

THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing.

This is a much darker (but funny) take on the super hero genre and not for the squeamish but I’m really enjoying it. I have 2 episodes to go.

When I looked this up, I found out it is based on the comic series, of the same name, written by Garth Ennis. He also wrote the Preacher comic book series (like the Boys, was also adapted for tv by Seth Rogen) and I can really see the similarities in style and tone – even though that show is quite different.

I’m a little curious as to why it’s called The Boys as there are a lot of female characters in this one that are not just background characters to further the *boys* stories and are major characters in their own right. maybe that was as strong an element in the comics?

Alternatino – Comedy Central

Follow Broad City's Arturo Castro as he attempts to navigate life as a modern Latino man – whatever that means. Watch Arturo reach the highest highs and lowest lows as he becomes a voiceover artist extraordinaire, tries to spice up his love life and attempts to keep his mother happy.

Sketch comedy can be hit or miss but Arturo Castro has far more hits and very few misses in this show. It’s very fast paced and funny with a fresh voice in comedy.

The Rain S2 – Netflix

The world as we know it has come to an end, due to a rain-carried virus that wiped out nearly everybody in Scandinavia. Six years after that event, two Danish siblings emerge from the safety of the bunker where they have been staying.

Siblings Simone and Rasmus are on the run with their rag tag group and I mostly liked S2. Mostly.  I like how tough choices have to be made and they break, otherwise solid, relationships. I’m always a fan of exploring ethics and moral dilemmas and think that’s where this show excels.

However, it veers off too much this season, separating the  group and throwing them in danger that is so repetitive that I started hoping they would die just to make it stop. They also set up a certain characters story line to build them up to get an emotional payoff but it didn’t deliver in the end. It felt more like a time waste.

Simone is getting so caught up in saving Rasmus that she's ignoring more important things. I get he’s your brother but girrrrrrl – let him go before he gets you all killed. And stop letting him find girls to fall in love with!!! It never ends well. lol

#TeamMartin! – trust no one kill and move on!

Black Spot – Netflix

A police chief and an eccentric new prosecutor investigate a string of grisly crimes and eerie phenomena in an isolated town at the edge of a forest.

I haven't watched this yet but Greg from Book Haven has been talking this one up so I hope to check it out this weekend.

Have you watched any of these? Have any TV/movie recommendations?

*Linda - I know you're going to have a thing or two to say about the Rain 😜

  2. Our cable tv rates doubled about four years ago so I cancelled it. I always have the intention of getting Netflix, but I never get around to it. 😋

    1. Oh I now. It's ridiculous how much they charge. I have a deal right now on cable because of the move but once it expires I'm dropping most of it if not all.

Try the 30 day free trials and see if you like it enough to keep first.

  3. Is it bad I haven't heard of these? I haven't watched Netflix in such a long time! Or any series or movie releases lol I'm so behind!

  4. Ooh I hope you like Black Spot. It's so eerie! And The Rain I need to finish- I think I'm on episode three? I have trouble with Rasmus though- I imagine as I get farther along in S2 I'll probably feel the same way about Simone! I like the show though, and you're right- the ethical dilemmas are the best part. Is it bad that I just want Rasmus to die so they can move on lol?

    1. I usually feel for Simone, even if she doesn't always make great choices but this season...And yes, I would be fine with Rasmus dying lol But things get super complicated by the end. Curious to see what you think of it when you're done watching!

    LOL, you're so bloodthirsty!

I'm sure I'll never get the chance to see ANY of these on free TV...just like Sense 8 (that you got me curious about a while ago)...but I think I'd vibe with Russian Doll.

  6. I always feel lost when I see posts about TV and movies. I'm not a TV watcher and rarely see movies. I don't have Netflix or any of the other streaming services. I haven't even heard of any of these (ha!) but The Rain does sound pretty interesting!

  7. I'm starting to finally get a few films watched each week but I have a huge backlog to get through! I'm way behind on TV shows-by about 6 or 7 years I think! I'm hoping to maybe set aside the whole weekend for watching then the weekdays to continue reading!

  8. I really want to start Russian Doll, but haven't had the chance yet. There are just so many amazing shows out there, I have tons on my watchlist at any given moment haha. As for recommendations, I really loved Chernobyl and The Haunting of Hill House, and I have been rewatching One Day at a Time (it's just so entertaining!). The first season of Killing Eve is spectacular, but I'm not really feeling the second, sadly. :( Great post!

    1. We saw Chernobyl and LOVED Haunting of Hill House. There's a S2 and I can't imagine what it will be about (I mean...obviously a haunting lol) but without that family? With them but then would it be good??

I did watch the first season of Killing Eve and liked it but didn't have the urge to go on.

I haven't seen One Day at a Time yet though.

  10. I might try The Boys. I think that one would work for me.

I watched the first episode of Russian Doll but couldn't get into it. Maybe I just quit too soon?

    1. I think you should try until at least ep 3. I didn't like episode 1 at all, #2 was meh but it really comes together in ep 3.

  11. I know absolutely nothing about these... I think I saw a trailer for Russian Doll? She repeats the same day over and over again? Or she dies horribly every day?

  12. I think I can say I watched The Boys (Matt finished the last two episodes without me last weekend...betrayal). Matt said that the show took a bit of a different direction compared to the TV show, maybe the title has something to do with the comics. Hmmm, now I need to ask Matt.

I watched the first episode of Russian Dolls and agree with you about NY looking like NY. All these shows try to convince you that every area is a trendier version of Manhattan!

  13. I've heard of most of these, but I have not watched them. I did start watching Dead to Me on Netflix the other day though and it's really good - I have a few episodes left!
