My Monday Musings…

Happy Monday my book-ish friends!!

My reading has been…going. I’m reading super slow for some reason so there’s a lack of reviews but at least I’m reading.

READING:
Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig ~ Goodreads
I think I’ve featured this on my monthly TBR pile for 6 months now but I finally picked it up. I’m about 75% through and I love how fresh and original it is despite a few flaws in the premise. A group of teen drag queens pulling off heists when one goes wrong.  Kind of Robin Hood meets Ocean’s Eleven but with teen drag queens. Roehrig does a great job of juggling the pov’s and making you care about everyone.

Prince of Killers (Fog City #1) by Layla Reyne ~ Goodreads

I love a good assassin story and I enjoyed Reyne’s previous Agents Irish & Whiskey trilogy but this one is draaaaaging and seems full of – not plot holes exactly – but plot – highly unlikely moments lol After over a week trudging through this one for a few minutes each night before bedtime -  I think I have to let it go and DNF.

The Afterward by E.K. Johnston ~ Goodreads
I’ve had the physical book since the publisher sent it to me before my move earlier this year. I almost passed on it (not my usual genre) but then read a few rave reviews so I decided to try the audio from the library. I drifted off almost immediately during the prologue so I think I need to read it so they set up sinks into my brain and then switch back to audio.

I’m SO much better with audiobooks but still struggle some.

Riven by Roan Parrish ~ Goodreads
I requested the audiobook for this one after seeing Tanya from Girl’s Plus Books talk about it several times on her blog. It’s a M/M rock star romance but both men are musicians which is a dynamic I haven’t read often and I’m liking it so far.

LIBRARY HOLDS:

Kill the Queen and Protect the Prince by Jennifer Estep ~ Goodreads
The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez ~ Goodreads
The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary ~ Goodreads
AROUND THE BLOGOSPHERE:
~ I tweeted this the other day but this is a fascinating post about the cost of purchasing library books and an explanation about Hoolpa vs the library.

MARY IN THE LIBRARY: PURCHASING DIGITAL MATERIALS FOR MY LIBRARY'S YA COLLECTION
~ I love Roberta from Off Beat YA’s new Tooting Your Trumpet feature and this was a particularly good round of blog posts & blogs I hadn't known about  (even if one of them was mine – is it wrong to toot my own toot??? lol)

New to me blogs – I love adding new blogs to my blog roll and here are a few new discoveries:

Whispering Chapters – romance and thriller reviews & a very pretty blog!
Elgee Writes – I love the eclectic mix of reviews, musings, quiz’s and tips – written in ways I can actually understand lol

What are you reading this week?

  1. Yaaaay Kill the Queen! It's a fun and quick one so I think it'll help you through all of the drag. I'm a bit suspect of E.K. Johnston after her blogger comments. Bleh.

LOL. But it's summer, and you have so many places to explore around your new town! You'll make up for it during the long winter days!

😂 Try not to write more tootable posts before August 4th, or I'll have to include them in my next TYT and people will think you're bribing me LOL.

  4. I've hardly been reading at all! I don't know what my deal is lol. Must be summertime blahs haha.

Kill the Queen sounds pretty good- I've seen a few good reviews for those.

Whispering and Elgee are both great blogs. I think I discovered them through the Sunday Post. :)

  5. Whoo hoo! You are finally getting to Blondes and you like it. What more can you ask for? I thought that book was fabulous and you tell me, after you finish, if you think there could be follow-ups, because I do.

  6. You had me at "Robin Hood meets Ocean's Eleven," because I love both!! Have you seen the original Ocean's Eleven? With Sinatra and Dean Martin? I think they're both in it... I really like that one, too. But there's something about Clooney, mmm.

  8. I'm glad you're enjoying Death Prefers Blondes. I do love that author, and I need to finally read that book. Sorry to hear Prince of Killers isn't working for you - I love the author! Ooh yay for enjoying Riven. I have the third book to hopefully read/review soon, but I LOVED the first two.

    1. It was fun!

I don't know - Prince of Killers is odd. let me know if you read it. It has a lot of similarities to her other series but the relationship seems unlikely in the way it's unraveling.

  9. I was about to comment on how dreamy the cover is for Prince of Killer’s but then I saw you are DNFing. Blah. I’m excited to go back and read Riven and Rend. THe one I read, Raze, really took me by surprise at how much I enjoyed it. Maybe I’ll see if my Overdrive or Hoopla has the audio of Riven.

  11. Too bad that not everything was a winner. I've been slow on reviews as well and I may not review a few I've been listening to (yep, audiobooks as well!). Might have to check out Riven though...

    1. I finished lol It had an interesting twist but there's a (major) part of it that seems SO unlikely to me that can't get past it.

Riven was very good! I had thought Tanya was reading that one and that's why I picked it up lol Oops.

  13. I'm glad you're enjoying that first book, nothing worse than waiting forever and finally reading a book only to dislike it lol. "Plot – highly unlikely moments" I love it, that should be a new official term, haha.

  14. Death Prefers Blondes really does sound unique! And seriously if you have tried multiple times with Prince of Killers... it's gotta go! I really want to read The Afterward too. But time is a real struggle. Maybe I'll wait to see if you were able to get into it!

I finished because I suck at DNF'ing lol It ended up having a twist and a CLIFFHANGER

  16. I've hit a reading spree lately, so I'll send some of those vibes your way! I'm really digging Lock Every Door, Riley Sager's latest novel. I'm in a heavy thriller mood now, so we'll see where that leads me.

    1. I'll take them!

Now that I'm reading more from the library and my own books - I want to read more thrillers. It's not a genre I usually get into but I want to try again.

  17. I hadn't seen Mary's blog post, but I was following the thread she originally had on Twitter a few weeks ago. I have been wanting to do a Hoopla vs. Overdrive post for a while now because when I talk about Hoopla on my blog a lot of people think it's like Overdrive, and that your library has one or the other. My library has both. I've been reluctant though because someone was already arguing with me in my comments one day that they were the same and I haven't been in the mood to deal with more comments like that. Ha ha. 😏

    1. Hers was more about how much they cost but it was super interesting!

I've never had Hoopla before and just recently got Libby (overdrive) but yes, they are very different. They are the same as in you are borrowing a book but that's about it lol

  18. I've got two apocalypse books that I need to get finished-book 2 of Premonitions and book 3 of the weather disaster series by JR Tate. Need to make a dent in both this next day or two!

  19. I love the Death Prefers Blondes cover!
Kill The Queen has been on my kindle a while... I need to read it soon as I really want to read Protect The Prince!

  20. I was going to say haven't you already read Death Prefers Blondes but you beat me to it. Glad you've finally picked it up since even I've noticed how often it's been mentioned here. And you have The Flatshare? I hope you read it as soon as your hold comes in. Loved that book a whole heap, I keep telling everyone about it. It's getting a bit boring.
