For What It's Worth

Whatever Wednesday

I’m trying to use Kindle Unlimited more since I bought a 2 year subscription during Prime days last year. TBH - I usually only use it for quick romances as a palette cleanser but while browsing I found a few popular YA titles that you might be interested and are *free* if you are a subscriber.

It's a great way to check out a series or find a new author.

*I added a few thoughts/link if I read or reviewed it.

KU:

The Fever King by Victoria Lee – This book isn’t without flaws – but it’s a pretty good alternative history/dytopian with LGBQT rep. You can read my review here.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon – I never read this series but it’s quite popular and reading the first book for free lets me try it without a commitment.

Air Awakens: The Complete Series by Elise Kova - I haven’t read this either but the covers are stunning and it's the complete series!!

“A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…”

“1700 pages of magic, romance, and epic fantasy.”

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake – fantasy series about three sisters who have to fight tot he death to become queen.

Deals if you don’t have KU:

Life1k3 by Jay Kristoff  $1.99 - his books haven't really worked for me but robot gladiators and android boys have me intrigued.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang (not YA) $2.99 - This is supposed to be a very intense, dark fantasy so I'll have to be in the mood but it's highly rated.

The Fever King by Victoria Lee $1.99 - see above

Black Wings Beating by Alex London $2.99 - fantasy, falconry, brother & sister bond, LGBQT rep. I did not love the writing style but the premise is very cool.

Queens of Geeks by Jenn Wilde $2.99 - Geek culture, f/f romance, good anxiety rep. My review

Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger $2.99 - the YA spin off to Carriger’s adult steampunk Parasol Protectorate series about girls at finishing school. Cute but a little slower paced.

And under The Things That Piss Me off file….lol

I was looking for a lighter read on my Libby library app and kept doing searches for these 3 new releases. Nada….So it’s been almost 2 weeks and STILL none of the books are on there. Weird – because they’re all pretty popular and should be available. So I was doing a general browse for new releases on their home page and voila! all of the books are there.

For some reason, they were filtering my search through YA – even though that was not my settings – so now I’m on super long wait lists for them all.

I love you Libby – but right now – I don’t like you lol

    1. So mean! Now the waits are between 9 and 23 weeks!

  2. I'm never good at patiently waiting to get my hands on something I want to read! Maybe that is why I don't look ahead and grab the books as soon as I start seeing them on blogs as they're released-it might be less stressful!

    1. I'm not impatient but I don't bother looking ahead too much anymore. I have enough on my plate.

  3. I recently read a different series by Elise Kova on KU, it was really good! I've seen a lot of mixed things about Black Wings Beating, but I remember the blurb sounded interesting. Sorry about the frustrating Libby app!

    1. I'll check that out.

Black Wings Beatings is a lot like TFK in that it's a cool premise but has issues.

  4. Argh the library wait list. Hope you move up on those lists soon. Curious to see what you think of the Bone Season. I liked the premise but the books were just too long and there were going to be too many of them so I bailed after book two.

    1. They do tend to be way shorter than the initial time given. But I remember Michelle Obama's Becoming taking almost 6 months lol

    1. Ooh - I don't know what that is. I'm just excited to get a library with Libby and Hoopla. I had RB Digital and it's AWFUL.

  6. I've thought about KU but there are so many books at my library that I haven't read yet. One of these days I'll get it though. It seems like a lot of authors are on there.

    1. I got it when it was 40% off - I would never pay full price for it. At the time, I was mostly caught up on arc's and had plenty of time to read but the move threw me off course and didn't use it for months.

  7. I've never subscribed to KU, I already have so many books to read.

    1. I don't think it's worth it unless you read certain genres/get a sale on it.

  8. Oh my gosh, that is so frustrating about the library wait! Especially since you’d been checking for them for so long. Ugh. Hope you move up the list quickly!

    1. It's probably for the best - they'll be spaced out a bit. I'm trying not to be bitter lol

  9. I signed up for the KU two months for 99¢ deal. I have it until August 1st. I wish I had time to read The Bone Season. Darn. šŸ˜’ I was surprised they had the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them screenplay. šŸ‘✨

    1. They seem to be getting more mainstream titles.

I think the reputation of crap books is making them adjust their offerings.

  10. I enjoyed Air Awakens. Solid book, and I am a TDC fan too. I am sad, when the library holds take forever, BUT all three of those were really good. The Friend Zone got me right in the feels. I loved it so much.

  11. Three Dark Crowns- cool! that's a good one. I thought Queens of Geek was pretty good too.

  12. I've been using my KU (and actually saving money!) a lot these past couple of months...About time too seeing as I've been paying for it for a couple of years and not using it nearly enough to justify it's presence... I wonder if Three Dark Crowns is available on the UK version? I'll be checking!

    1. I got the 2 year deal and had really planned to get about 50% of my books from there but then the move happened and threw everything out of whack.

I don't think I would ever pay full price for it but at a deep discount it's worth it.

  13. Lifelike, The Poppy War and Air Awakens are all ones I want to read. I actually own The Bone Season and it's on my shelf waiting for me to try it :)

    1. I had it way back but had passed it on because it was so long and they had announced it would be an 8 book series. I didn't have time for that lol
