October TBR pile

We have FINALLY gotten a few cool…hours - not days yet – just hours - where there’s a break in the humidity – but I’ll take it! This morning was 68 degrees and I went for a nice long walk in the park.

October is going to be a busy reading month but SO many great books on the pile to choose from! All of these are from ALA18 (the American Library Association conference)

After this – I only have about 5 more arc’s for the rest of 2018 so it’s back to reading my own books for fun.

This is the first time I’ve gotten through most all of my conference books in a timely fashion. Not all of them worked and I’m getting better about DNF’ing those but most have been great reads.

I wanted to get to spooky reads in October but I’m not sure when I’ll fit that in. Knowing me, I’ll read creepy stuff in December instead lol

So without further ado….here’s my October reading stack!

The Geography of Lost Things by Jessica Brody
What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
Darkdeep by Ally Condi and Brendan Reichs
Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman
This is Kind of and Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender
The Darkest Star by Jennifer Armentrout
Light Years by Kass Morgan
Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts) by Lev A.C. Rosen
Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzie Lee
Black Wings Beating by Alex London
Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich

I already finished This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender (Goodreads) - Very cute story about changing relationships, second chances, family. There’s actually quite a bit of angst but in a way that felt authentic to being a teen and screwing up – making things right again. It’s a quick/light read.

I’m really looking forward to The Geography of Lost Things – I always enjoy Brody’s contemporaries. I’ve heard nothing bu amazing things about Dry by Neal & Jarrod Shusterman and it’s been YEARS since I’ve read a dystopian novel. What If It’s Us, Jack of Hearts and The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy all sound amazing!

I’m reading Black Wings Beating buy Alex London right now and I’m struggling with the writing. I haven’t heard great things about it so I’ll give it another 20 pages or so then make a call to DNF or not.

What are you all reading in October?

Have you read any of these or looking forward to any of them?

  1. I'm glad your weather is starting to cool off a little. We are back up in the 80's this week again - I'm over it!
I don't recognize any of those books, but I hope you enjoy!

  2. It is warm here right now and I just want to be able to wear my sweaters and sweatshirts. I really liked The Geography of Lost Things. I really can't wait to read What If It's Us. Enjoy all of these!

    1. It's still 90 during the day. It's so depressing. I'm at the point of being thrilled with the slightest dip in temperature or humidity.

  3. Five left? You've had such a brilliant year of reading Karen, I'm hoping the next few months I can reign in my review copies and finish on a high note too. I'm reading What If It's Us at the moment and although I usually love Adam Silvera, I'm not feeling it yet. Just checking out Darkdeep now. Ally Condie books have been a bit of a hit or miss for me in the past but really interested to see what you think of that one. Here's to a wonderful month of reading Karen ♡♡♡

    1. I don't really request anything anymore so once the ALA books are gone that's that lol
I've heard similar things about What About Us so that's another one I'll end if I'm not feeling it as well.
The Condi is co-authored and MG, which I didn't realize when I picked it up.

  4. No creepy but that's ok, there is always December :) My list is filled with creepy books. I'm sure you're surprised. I might throw a romance ARC in there since they're super late.

  8. Haha, I love your meditating skeleton.
Dry is on my list, though some reviews have made me a little wary of it. We'll see.
I have all my Halloween Month reviews scheduled since...midyear? LOL. So I was planning on reading for fun this month (in particular, I want to reread Deadgirl: Goneward by B.C. Johnson), by before I get to it, I have a new novel for beta-reading by Troy H. Gardner, and go figure, it's horror-related as well!

    1. I've only heard good things about Dry but I've mostly been trying to stay away from reviews - of everything lol

      Happy Halloween reading!

I have not but maybe I should have Kevin make me one for Christmas.

  11. I may not get to What if It's Us This month, because I've been so behind in my reading schedule. I'm excited to see what you think of Black Beating Wings cause it sounds so goo.

Really want to read What If It's Us. I guess I'll have to wait till it comes out next week.

    Happy reading, Karen!

  13. "Cool hours - not days yet" - that is a mood and a very accurate description of what I'm getting as well. Good luck with getting through all of the ARCs from ALA18 - hope you enjoy them all! If you don't, just think of your own books as the light at the end of the tunnel. ;)

  14. Wowwww I am impressed that you read all of your ALA books (or will have soon, anyway!) I decided to skip Black Wings Beating because it seemed too... birdy. But I am very excited to get to Dry and Light Years- hopefully I can VERY soon! And I hope that you have good luck with this batch!!

    1. I gave up on Black Wings too. Nto because it was *birdy* but because it was wordy...bahahaha But seriously, the writing seemed convoluted and I had to re-read sentences several times to make sense of them and that was getting tedious.

I'm not a big fantasy reader so maybe that's why.

  15. Yay for the cool off (even if only temporary)! The Geography of Lost things sounds fun, and The Lady's Guide to Petticoats & Piracy seems to be around a lot- looks fun too. Hope you get to the scary reads soon. :)

  16. I am in Orlando right this second, and I was so hot and sweaty all day. I wish I was in your weather. I LOVED The Geography of Lost Things. I usually like Brody's books, but there is always a little something that keeps it from being a big hit with me. Not this time. And Epic Love Story was adorable and wonderful too. I wanted an epilogue or something, but what we got was fabulous.

i hope you have a good time though.

And yes, an epilogue would have been great for Epic Love Story. Even if it was just in NYC

  20. Great job on keeping up with your ARCs. I'm sure I'll read some spooky books this month, but I won't get to them all so yeah, I'll be reading them in December I'm sure. LOL I'm glad you liked Kind of an Epic Love Story; I really liked that one too. And I loved Jack of Hearts! I'm reading Lady's Guide right now and really loving it - I'm about halfway, I guess.

Hooray for making it through the arcs. I think I have three more (two in Oct and one in Jan) and then I’m done. I haven’t requested anything in a couple months and plan to keep it that way. I miss reading MY books!

  23. I've been on vacation in the Pacific Northwest, so thankfully I'm in cooler temps. Won't be that way when I get home to Southern California where it's still in the 90s :(

This Kind of Epic Love Story sounds cute. I'm all about DNF if it isn't working. Why waste precious time reading something you're not enjoying? :)

  24. Yeah we just had a big rainstorm so I think we have entered our cold season now. Since it definitely feels like fall. We were at 80 degrees and now we are at 50 degrees. Happened very quickly. I am working on getting caught up on ARC so I can read some books from my TBR.

  29. The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy sounds like so much fun! I really need to read the first in the series too.

My October reading pile is pretty lean. I have a few ARCs that I need to read and beyond that I'm not sure what I'll get read. :( I definitely want Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas though... I've waited a year and a half to see how that series ends so I'll make time for that one at least. :)

  30. I saw this on instagram but I'll comment here too. I loved The Ladys Guide to Petticoats and Piracy and I hope you will be able to enjoy it so much! I also want to eventually read What If It's Us, and I also want to read Dry which I own but just need the time to get to. I've been hearing positive things about The Georgraphy of Lost Things as well.
