tell me something tuesday

Tell Me Something Tuesday is hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings and discusses a wide range of topics from books to blogging.

Question: What do you like about reading on an e-reader?

Answer:

I’m old school. I always prefer reading a physical book.

I don’t have a thing for the smell of a book or the feel of the paper or anything like that but I have a better sense of place. With e-books I can never tell where I am. I know there’s a helpful page or percentage number on the bottom but I like to feel where I am in the book. I’m also big on post-it tabbing and going back to my favorite passages and I just know where they are with a physical book – even if I haven’t looked at for years.

Having said all that – the majority of my reading is on my Paperwhite for a few great reasons.

1. Space. I can download and store hundreds of books on my Kindle without taking up any space. Same with traveling – one little Kindle vs. stacks of books bulky books.

2. I can read in bed without disturbing Kevin.

3. $$$$ Physical books cost more while e-books can range from .99-4.99 (my limit for an e-book purchase). Even free. Damn those freebies and one-click deals! They get me every time!

But it has allowed me to catch up on series and try new authors that I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

4. Bookmarking, taking notes, highlighting, looking up words, count the number of times a word is used - are all easier on an e-reader.

5. You can make all kinds of adjustments to the font size. back-lighting – the book & author information is right there with a few taps – you can automatically add your book to Goodreads and on my Paperwhite I have all my books organized into folders.

What say you? Do you use an e-reader? If so what do you love about it?

  1. Karen I fought the urge for years to move onto ereaders, even with ereaders, I didn't find myself drawn to it, but overtime and with NG only having ebooks as options, I slowly got used to it. Despite my preference still being printed; love the feel, smell of a fresh paperback, and like yourself I like to know where I am in the book, but ereaders are definitely growing on me.

I use the highlight option instead of sticky notes for my Kindle books, and for review books I find those easier as I can type some notes/comments to go with it.

    1. I sort of caved and got one because of NG and e-arc's from authors. There really isn't a choice in that case but I've grown to love them - even though I would prefer a physical book.

I do love the note taking and highlighting in ebooks. So much easier for reviewing!

  2. I agree with you 100% on all your reasons . I really need to try and organize my books into folders and such. It just seems daunting to actually do with so many books.

    1. I did it in baby steps because it was too daunting at first. I did my categories and added the first 2-3 pages of books and anything new I downloaded from that point on. Then when I had some time I'd work on the backlog.

  3. I love my Paperwhite. I never go anywhere without it. It has changed my life!

    1. I had a tablet for awhile and that was great but too heavy so the paperwhite is amazing!

I still love reading physical copies of series (like trilogies) and YA but for romance nothing beats an e-reader for me. There's no way I would read that many without it just because it's cheaper to buy them that way.

  4. Print will always win for me...though I might actually love audio the best now ;) Poor ebooks cos they just do not measure up

    1. I find them super convenient but I'll always prefer paper.

  5. I think my comment has disappeared about three times now. Just watch, now it’ll post like twenty times. LOL

Anyway, I love having the option to read on an e-reader. Whether it’s on my Kindle Fire, or the Kindle app on my iPad or iPhone, it’s just so convenient. When on the go, I’d much rather just read on my phone or Kindle instead of lugging a book around (and getting it bent up and damaged - ack!). Plus there’s storage. I’m almost at capacity on my bookshelves but on my Kindle I can keep on adding! :)

    1. Oh no! It's here now lol

I try so many more books because of e-readers. I think twice when I have to actually purchase a paper book but will impulse but all the sale books.

Wait...is that a good thing?? lol

    2. Um, I’m going with yes. Yes, adding to the already staggering TBR On the Kindle is a good thing. (Ahem...)

  6. I love my kindle and couldn't blog without it. But I agree - the percentage thing always perplexes me. It's like: 22% of WHAT? I'll be reading what seems like forever and be only 11% and wonder how long the book is, anyway....

I need to know where I'm at!

  7. Yeah there are some nice things to reading e books, It does make certain things way easier, but I feel like there is nothing that can replace a physical book.

  8. I love my ereader and those are some my thoughts too with taking it. I actually read my kindle instead of books while on vacation.

  9. Agree with all those reasons save one... my dreaded is so old I still need a light to read. I think I need to up my game. LOL

  10. I know it's often a debate whether real readers aren't eBook readers, which is ridiculous but I love my Kindle too. It's so much lighter than a book, easier to read and won't disturb your partner either. The Kindle Paperwhite is superb isn't it!

    1. Oh really?? I've heard that with audio books (also ridiculous) but not e-readers.

I used the app on my tablet for years but nothing beats the Paperwhite.

  11. I'm like you, I prefer an actual book. Having said that, I read a ton of ebooks. Used to be mostly on my Nook, but in the past year or so it's probably switched to more on my phone. I used to say I hated having it be so small and having to swipe to turn pages so many times, but I've gotten used to it. I agree with you about having a harder time knowing where you are in the book when it is an e-book. I prefer if possible to read fantasy books in a physical copy because it is easier to go back and forth when I need to reread something. At least to me it is. But give me a good contemporary romance or similar and I can burn through it on the e-reader.

    1. I'm the same with trilogies or certain genres. I feel like I need to look back or know where I am while reading.

I'm the same with romances though. I actually wouldn't want paper books for those. There would be 100's!!! lol

  12. I'll always prefer a physical copy of a book - I'm actually one of those people that love the smell of books. hah It's also much easier to tell where you are in the story, like you said. However, I do have a Paperwhite and it's handy for traveling as you have lots of books at once and I do like that it lights up so I can read at night without worrying about a lamp.

    1. It's more a matter of convenience than preference for me.

  13. Yep, I'm the same way Karen. I much prefer reading physical books (for various reasons -- nostalgia, smell/touch, etc.) but reading on my iPad almost always wins out because it's just so damn convenient! I used to commute to work and also travel a lot on trips and stuff, and my iPad was a lifesaver. Something tells me that my boss wouldn't have understood if I tried to tell her that I only packed one work appropriate outfit because the rest of my bag was stuffed with books! 😂

  14. I prefer print books as well but I like to get ebooks when it's a large 600 page hardcover book that will end up making my hands hurt to read it for hours. lol

    1. Most of my e-books are romance. I read so many and so fast that it would be too cumbersome to have that many books lying around and I get most of them for .99 or free so I wouldn't even be reading them otherwise.

  15. Space and bookmarks/notes are huge advantages for ebooks for me!! Lately I've been wanting more physical books though, not sure why lol

  16. I do majority of my reading on my Kindle app as well. It's just really more convenient, and it makes the reading experience customizable (like what you said about the fonts, lighting, etc). Plus I get to switch reading positions fairly easily, which is always a plus for comfort. ♥

    1. Ohh that too! My cat HATES it though because I move around too much with the Kindle lol

  17. I haven't used my Kindle in a while, but there are definitely advantages, like you said. It's nice when you go on vacation, that you can store multiple books but like you, I like to see my place. And getting close to the end of a book is always a weird thrill. I want it to end, sometimes I don't want it to end, but I like to see my physical progress :)

    1. Sometimes, near the end of a book, I like to flip back and I don't know where that is in an e-book lol

  18. I fought against getting a Kindle for YEARS. I am a weirdo who loves the smell of books and the feel of them. I am also like you in that I like knowing exactly where I am in a book and not relying on the Kindle's estimate of time/percent.

BUT...I started using NetGalley and it became such a pain to only read the books on my computer. I caved and got a Kindle a couple years ago and now it is full of so many books, I can't even count. Good thing the Kindle does for me. It has the relatively small number of 641 books currently.

  19. I prefer print, too. And remember them better. Saw a thing once about that and how with ebooks the brain doesn't process them quite the same way. I do enjoy it for freebies, though, too, and bookmarking quotes/notes. that is handy for sure :)

I wouldn't read as much without it though - all those one-click deals and freebies!
