review: trust (wrong #3) by jana aston

“Knock knock!”

“Um… Who’s there?”

Yeah. That was me, on my last date. Before you feel sorry for me

you should know that I was the one telling the jokes. Jokes as in
plural, because I didn’t stop with just one. Of course not.

Hi, I’m Chloe Scott. The most awkward single girl in the city.

But I’m going to get it together. I am.

I’m going to learn how to date like a grown up.

I’m going to have an orgasm not given to myself.

I’m going to fall in love and live happily ever after.

Right after I get out of this interrogation room. ~ Goodreads

Review:

Trust was super cute, and at 193 pages, is perfect book to cozy up with and read on one of these cold winter nights.

Chloe, a kindergarten teacher, knows she doesn’t NEED a man, but after all her friends start pairing off, would like a companion. Only thing is, she gets super awkward when nervous on dates – often resorting to knock, knock jokes to fill the silence. Add in all the unsolicited dick pics (POD’s – proof of dick – as her best friend Everly calls them) from the dating site guys she's met, and Chloe feels totally out of her element trying to meet a nice guy.

After yet another disastrous date, where the guy is a wanted felon and makes a run for it mid-date, she's questioned by FBI agent, Boyd Gallagher. Chloe thinks he’s hot as hell but arrogant and can’t wait to get away from him. Boyd, on the other hand, falls for crime tv show obsessed, refreshingly honest, Chloe immediately. Since he's also her best friend's newly discovered half brother, they start running into each other a lot.

Boyd lures Chloe in by asking her to be his fake date for a family wedding. It’s a delicate dance around Chloe’s trust issues and Boyd doesn’t want to spook her too early in the relationship but he’s in it for the long haul.

Chloe’s inner monologue and endless dating horror stories could be a little draining at times but this couple was just too darn cute and funny to read about so it ended up being a minor quibble. I haven’t read anything by this author before but I’m definitely going to go back and read books 1 & 2 from this series. The previous couples played a small part in Trust but this reads a s a stand alone.

Here are a few fun quotes from Chloe:

“He’s probably into crazy shit like having sex with the lights on…”

“Except dating isn’t any easier than it was in high school. Or college. Meaning it’s not great. Dating is basically three hours of talking to a stranger, which is stupid, right? I don’t enjoy that. I mean who enjoys that? Who? Who are these people? It’s weird. dating is weird.”

And this cute little image after the cover page (which explains the donut in the book photo above):

I LOVE when authors add fun things like this. Especially in e-books, which can be kind of blah otherwise. And it says so much about their personality and writing when they can have fun like that.

  1. Omg Chloe sounds like my kind of girl - who doesn't love awkward first dates? This book has all the tropes I love AND it's short and sweet!

  4. Oh the draining part is why I don't usually go for contemporaries. However, they way you say they are cute together must outshine that problem. I also have to say I enjoy it when an author has a good sense of humor as well. Now I want a donut. *channels Homer Simpson*

    1. She just had a LOT of bad dating stories. They were all hilarious so it was ok but maybe a few too many.

  9. I have this book on my tbr-list, but completely forgot about it. It actually has several things that I enjoy in Romance: fake-relationship trope, humor and awkward heroine. Thanks so much for putting in on my radar again. I’m in the mood for such read at the moment. Wonderful review, Karen!
