Danger stalks the city of steam and shadows.

Janus Mikani and Celeste Ritsuko work all hours in the Criminal Investigation Division, keeping citizens safe. He’s a charming rogue with an uncanny sixth sense; she’s all logic—and the first female inspector. Between his instincts and her brains, they collar more criminals than any other partnership in the CID.

Then they’re assigned a potentially volatile case where one misstep could end their careers. At first, the search for a missing heiress seems straightforward, but when the girl is found murdered—her body charred to cinders—Mikani and Ritsuko’s modus operandi will be challenged as never before. Before long, it’s clear the bogeyman has stepped out of nightmares to stalk gaslit streets, and it’s up to them to hunt him down. There’s a madman on the loose, weaving blood and magic in an intricate, lethal ritual that could mean the end of everything.

Steampunk has been a hit or miss genre for me but I have complete faith that Ann Aguirre – collaborating with her husband Andres Aguirre, will hit it out of the park. In this interview over at The Nocturnal library, Ann explains how Andres is bringing a gaming perspective to the series as well. Sounds exciting & I LOVE that cover.

Pen Khan’s life revolves around secrets: the secrets of her three month disappearance from school last winter, and the cause of the scars that mar her cheeks, and most secret of all, her twin sister Parva: her doppelganger in London-Under-Glass, the city behind the mirrors.

Pen’s trying to return to a normal life, but when Parva vanishes, Pen journeys to London-Under-Glass to find her reflected sister, entering a world where scars make you beautiful and criminals will kill you for your face. A world where Pen’s sister has secrets of her own.

Released in July 2013 in the UK by Jo Fletcher and in the US, Fall in 2013 by Flux.

I loved Tom Pollock’s debut novel, The City’s Son (The Skyscraper Throne #1) (my review). Pen was a minor character in that book but went through a horrific experience. I can’t wait to read from her pov and see how Pollock expands his crazy living city.

  1. Both seem like very cool books. I do like Steampunk, usually, and know how much you love Aguirre's writing.
    Thanks for sharing!
