Review: Eve and Adam by Michael Grant, Katherine Applegate

13493463And girl created boy…

In the beginning, there was an apple—

And then there was a car crash, a horrible injury, and a hospital. But before Evening Spiker’s head clears a strange boy named Solo is rushing her to her mother’s research facility. There, under the best care available, Eve is left alone to heal.

Just when Eve thinks she will die—not from her injuries, but from boredom—her mother gives her a special project: Create the perfect boy.

Using an amazingly detailed simulation, Eve starts building a boy from the ground up. Eve is creating Adam. And he will be just perfect... won’t he? ~ Goodreads

Review:
I think I was expecting a darker story than I got with Eve & Adam. This is not a bad thing. Despite exploring some pretty weighty topics like genetic modification/engineering, abusive boyfriends and several hard core action scenes for good measure this was a surprisingly fun, quick read.

When Eve creates Adam it's disturbing yet kind of hilarious. Eve is a teenage girl creating the perfect boy. That's just wrong on so many levels but who wouldn't want to tweak their boyfriend or husband to be more helpful, kinder…….but what if perfect isn't right for Eve?

Add in a mom with questionable motives and a real live human boy, Solo, who is perfectly imperfect and Eve isn't quite sure what to believe anymore.

There is not a lot of world building in Eve and Adam. It's told in alternating POV's between Eve and Solo although we learn quite a bit about Adam even through their eyes. It left me a little confused or more accurately wanting….but since this is supposedly the first book in a series I'm ok with not knowing everything right off the bat.

There was a bit of insta-love on the side of one character that I didn't quite understand but luckily it still took most of the book for any type of real relationship to develop so it didn't annoy me very much.

Rating: 3.5 out of 4 Not quite as deep and complex as I was expecting but a lot of fun. Just go into it for the sci-fi thrill ride with a side of romance and intrigue & pop culture references. I read Eve & Adam in about 4 hours and found it surprisingly thought provoking for such a light read.

  1. I'm surprisingly glad to hear it's not all dark and sci-fi drama-drama. I bought it and haven't read it because I'm just not up to all that stuff after my last experience with one of those futuristics.

Funny, however inadvertent, with some pop culture references and mild world-building I can do! Great review, you've tempted me back to it. :)

    1. It was just fun...which is good. I would have liked a little bit more world building or background information in some places but it was still a great book to escape in for a few hours.

  5. Huh. I guess I thought Eve & Adsm was much heavier than it is. That's definitely a good thing for me. Glad the love story worked for you. Great review, Karen!

    1. It's not perfect or that fleshed out but it's fun. Just go into it with that train of thought and it's enjoyable.
