AUCTION: Doctors Without Borders & The Fisher House Foundation

The big Halloween Charity Auction starts TOMORROW!

We kick off with Kelley Armstrong! Here's a sneak peek at what's in Kelley's auction:

I want to tell you a little bit about the charities that we're hopefully raising a LOT of money for.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.
They provide impartial assistance to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe independently of any political, military or religious agendas.
Every year, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides emergency medical care to millions of people caught in crises in nearly 60 countries around the world. MSF provides assistance when catastrophic events — such as armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, or natural disasters — overwhelm local health systems. MSF also assists people who face discrimination or neglect from their local health systems or when populations are otherwise excluded from health care.
Eighty percent of MSF's overall funding (and 100 % of MSF's US funding) comes from private donations. (Information reprinted from Doctors Without Broders website)

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 11,000 families, and have made available nearly three million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House! ( Reprinted from the Fisher House Foundation website)

In February, after the Haiti earthquakes I had an auction on my blog to raise money for Doctors Without Borders relief efforts. The auction raised $1600.00!!
Unfortunately there always seems to be a crisis and there will always be a need of donations to help fund the efforts of both of these fantastic organizations.
Both organizations have a 4 star rating with Charity Navigator.

The winners of each auction will have the choice of which organization they wish to donate to - or a combination of both. (For example a winning bid of $100.00 could be split into $50 for Doctors Without Borders & $50 for Fisher House Foundation)

Here's a short explanation of how the auction will go:

You place your bid by putting the dollar amount and your first name in the comment section. For example, if I wanted to bid $20, I would put “$20 Karen A” in the comment box. When the auction ends the winner will make a donation directly to Doctors Without Borders or the Fisher House Foundation, then send me the receipt and the books will be sent out to you (complete rules will be posted at the time of the auction).

I know these are tough economic times but I hope you’ll join me in the next few weeks to have some fun, show your love for your favorite authors who so generously donated signed books, and raise money for two great organizations!

We have a great lineup of authors - a few complete series, an ARC and more! It’s an auction so get in there…..have fun…..and bid whatever you can! You never know - you could have the winning bid!

So go forth and tweet, blog, Facebook, MySpace, and anything else that will help get the word out. And don’t forget to come back TOMORROW and bid!!
