Review & Giveaway! The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More FunGretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places: a city bus. "The days are long, but the years are short," she realized. "Time is passing, and I'm not focusing enough on the things that really matter." In that moment, she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project. In this lively and compelling account of that year, Rubin carves out her place alongside the authors of bestselling memoirs such as Julie and Julia, The Year of Living Biblically, and Eat, Pray, Love. With humor and insight, she chronicles her adventures during the twelve months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier.
Rubin didn't have the option to uproot herself, nor did she really want to; instead she focused on improving her life as it was. Each month she tackled a new set of resolutions: give proofs of love, ask for help, find more fun, keep a gratitude notebook, forget about results. She immersed herself in principles set forth by all manner of experts, from Epicurus to Thoreau to Oprah to Martin Seligman to the Dalai Lama to see what worked for her—and what didn't.
Her conclusions are sometimes surprising—she finds that money can buy happiness, when spent wisely; that novelty and challenge are powerful sources of happiness; that "treating" yourself can make you feel worse; that venting bad feelings doesn't relieve them; that the very smallest of changes can make the biggest difference—and they range from the practical to the profound.
Written with charm and wit, The Happiness Project is illuminating yet entertaining, thought-provoking yet compulsively readable. Gretchen Rubin's passion for her subject jumps off the page, and reading just a few chapters of this book will inspire you to start your own happiness project. (Non Fiction)

Review:
I bought this book on impulse while browsing in the bookstore one day. I'm not sure why, but I thought it was going to be a lighthearted, humorous take on what it takes to be happy. I based this assumption on the this tag line on the front cover:

The Happiness Project - Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.

What I found was something akin to a chart, graph and bullet list approach to being happy. Which kind of seems like the sort of thing that would take loads of time and make me the opposite of happy.

I have to admire the author for recognizing and tackling the issue but I was completely turned off by the approach. She makes charts, compiles studies, quotes, makes resolutions with a kind of wacky zeal. When she discusses her happiness project with her husband and he asks her if she is unhappy….her response is to launch into a lengthy explanation of a 2006 study that reveals how people rank themselves on the happiness scale, complete with percentages and her personal questionnaire results (Out of a range of 1 to 5 she scored a 3.92). She feels the results show she's happy - but not as happy as she should be.

I'm not knocking the approach. I do realize that most people like that type of organization and are highly goal motivated. I'm not, so I guess the whole thing rubbed me the wrong way. If I approached being happy with such fervor I might end up in the loony bin. To me happiness is attained when we stop running around like chickens with our heads cut off and learn to live in the moment. Again- I understand that this is just my way of thinking. Rubin's approach could work wonders for someone else.

That's not to say there isn't loads of useful informations in The Happiness Project. Each chapter is focused on a month and goal such as January/Boost Energy- Vitality - go to sleep earlier, exercise more etc, February/Remember Love - Marriage - fight right, quit nagging. Other chapters include leisure, friendships, money, books.

There are loads of great tips about organizing & excellent motivational quotes. And you can't argue about eating better, keeping a gratitude journal or being a better friend, wife & mother. I'm just not sure that you need to approach the topic of happiness in the same way that you may prepare for war.

The results speak for themselves though. Rubin was indeed happier at the end of her project. Her marriage had improved, she felt like a better mother and friend. I love this line from the closing chapter:

"I found that the ruby slippers had been on my feet all along; the bluebird was singing outside my kitchen window"

Rubin's approach may not be the right one for me but I say follow whatever you need to to find your Happiness.

Review(s) & a Giveaway!

Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase (Scoundrels #3)
Publisher: Avon
January 1995
Buy the book! Amazon (only .99!! for the Kindle)

They call him many names, but Angelic isn't one of them . . .
Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the "Bane and Blight of the Ballisters"—and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He's determined to continue doing what he does best—sin and sin again—and all that's going swimmingly, thank you . . . until the day a shop door opens and she walks in.
She's too intelligent to fall for the worst man in the world . . .
Jessica Trent is a determined young woman, and she's going to drag her imbecile brother off the road to ruin, no matter what it takes. If saving him—and with him, her family and future—means taking on the devil himself, she won't back down. The trouble is, the devil in question is so shockingly irresistible, and the person who needs the most saving is—herself!

Buy the book! When Beauty Tamed the Beast

Miss Linnet Berry Thrynne is a Beauty . . . Naturally, she's betrothed to a Beast. Piers Yelverton, Earl of Marchant, lives in a castle in Wales where, it is rumored, his bad temper flays everyone he crosses. And rumor also has it that a wound has left the earl immune to the charms of any woman.
Linnet is not just any woman.
She is more than merely lovely: her wit and charm brought a prince to his knees. She estimates the earl will fall madly in love—in just two weeks.
Yet Linnet has no idea of the danger posed to her own heart by a man who may never love her in return.
If she decides to be very wicked indeed . . . what price will she pay for taming his wild heart?

Review:
I recently read these two books back to back and they were so similar (in a good way) that I decided to review them as one.
Both Lord of Scoundrels and When Beauty Tamed the Beast are historical romances and are inspired by the classic Beauty and Beast faery tale. Both men are considered beastly although I would venture to say most of it is in their own minds. Both Dain (LoS) and Piers (WBTtB) have very minor physical flaws, its more their personalities that make them seem beastly. Of course a beautiful woman comes into both of their lives.
It's the heroines that made both these books stand out for me. Most recent stories of this nature feature spunky, witty, intelligent female characters that can go toe to toe with their alpha male which culminates in steamy sex but not much more. It's all about the witty banter and one upsmanship. That is present in both tales but Jessica (LoS) and Linnet (WBTtB) are so much more than the beauty that makes the former Scoundrel/Mr. Cranky Pants make declarations of true love. They both believe in their men - Dain (LoS) & Piers (WBTtB). They love them no matter what BUT they expect their love and loyalty to be justified. Both women expect the men to respect them and step up to the plate and be good human beings, not just good lovers - Piers as a Doctor and Dain as a ….(can't say - spoiler - :-)) I love how Jessica and Linnet stood up for what they believed in while still giving unwavering support to Dain and Piers.
Dain and Piers are good tortured alpha heroes, although both border on whiny at times which would be the only thing keeping me from a perfect 4 rating for either book. The sex scenes are fairly steamy without being overly explicit. I'm not a huge historical romance fan yet I did enjoy these two books.

Rating: 3.5 for both Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase & When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James.

Graveminder by Melissa Marr Giveaway!

Harper Collins has generously given me three copies of Graveminder by Melissa Marr to give away to my followers!!
If your not familiar with Melissa yet, she is the author of the insanely popular Wicked Lovely YA series. Graveminder will mark Melissa's debut adult novel. No faeries this time around but Graveminder sounds chillingly creepy. I can't wait to read it! I'll have a review up in the coming weeks.

You can read more about Graveminder below and then fill out the form to enter. CONTEST ENDS 6/19

Graveminder

Book Description:

Three sips to mind the dead . . .
Barrow never forgot the attention her grandmother Maylene bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the small town where Bek spent her adolescence. There wasn't a funeral that Maylene didn't attend, and at each one Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual: She took three sips from a silver flask and spoke the words "Sleep well, and stay where I put you."
Now Maylene is dead, and Bek must go back to the place she left a decade earlier. She soon discovers that Claysville is not just the sleepy town she remembers, and that Maylene had good reason for her odd traditions. It turns out that in Claysville the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected; beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D. If the dead are not properly cared for, they will come back to satiate themselves with food, drink, and stories from the land of the living. Only the Graveminder, by tradition a Barrow woman, and her Undertaker—in this case Byron Montgomery, with whom Bek shares a complicated past—can set things right once the dead begin to walk.
Although she is still grieving for Maylene, Rebekkah will soon find that she has more than a funeral to attend to in Claysville, and that what awaits her may be far worse: dark secrets, a centuries-old bargain, a romance that still haunts her, and a frightening new responsibility—to stop a monster and put the dead to rest where they belong. (From Harper Collins)

Review:
Those Who Fight Monsters brings together a collection of stories from 14 of today's top Urban Fantasy writers. Each of the stories feature detectives investigating all manner of paranormal shenanigans from missing persons, to demon summoning, all with a supernatural slant.
A few were humorous and I fell right into them. Dusted – A Cosa Nostradamas Story – by Laura Anne Gilman, and Hell Bound by Jackie Kessler were two really good ones. The latter featured an unabashed bad girl succubus (Jezebel/Jesse) that really had me wanting to investigate the character further. Apparently it was a prequel story to Kessler's Hell on Earth series where Jesse is reformed (sort of). Another good story was Deal Breaker by Justin Gustainis. It wasn't action packed but it was riveting nonetheless.
Other than Jackie Kessler, I had never read any of these authors books before and it put me at a bit of a disadvantage. Although most of the stories intrigued me, I felt out of the loop. A few jumped right in without explanation of the world or supernatural elements so I didn't get the full enjoyment out of each one that I might have if I already new the series beforehand.
I would think if you're a fan of any of these authors though, this would be a great collection of short stories. All were very quick reads.

SHIFT Blog Tour Kick-Off!! Logan's "Sucks to Be a Ghost (Sometimes)" playlist

Hi and welcome to the SHIFT blog tour!  Thanks to Karen here at For What It’s Worth for hosting, and thanks to all the bloggers who’ll be taking part.  Most of all, thank YOU all for coming to SHIFT’s Book Birthday party!
Before we get to the main topic of the day (Logan Patrick Keeley), I want to officially announce the title of the third book in the Shade trilogy.
First, there was SHADE…
Then, there was SHIFT…
And next summer….
probably on May 2…
although that can always change…
(you know how things are in publishing)….
There’ll be….
SHINE!
Why SHINE?  Well, obviously, it’s a five-letter word beginning with SH.  But once you’ve read SHIFT, you’ll understand why SHINE is a perfect title.
(Titles rejected as less than perfect: SHAFT, SHOVE, SHAVE, and SHARK.  Also, SHRUG.)
On to the post!  I decided that today’s installment should be about Logan, since it would be hosted by one of his biggest fans.  The Other Guy gets a lot of female attention, (especially from women over 30―what’s up with that?), so it always makes me smile when someone declares themselves Team Logan.
Because Logan is a lot like me.  Now, I can’t sing or play the guitar.  I’m rarely the life of the party.  And I’m not seventeen, a guy, or, you know, dead.
But Logan and I have many of the same hopes and fears.  We’re both a little (a lot?) self-absorbed, we’re both major hams, we both get ecstatic over shiny new things, whether it’s a band or the latest Vans skate shoes.  We both could not live without music, especially the Irish kind.  And no matter how many friends we have, we secretly believe that everyone thinks we’re a jerk.
Since Logan expresses himself best through music, it seemed fitting to base his post around one of the many playlists he made Aura.  He created “Sucks to Be a Ghost (Sometimes)” after his death, during the period that SHADE takes place.  Most of the songs are about Aura, but some are about his struggles with death and regret and feeling invisible.
You can think of it as sort of a SHADE playlist from Logan’s point-of-view, though it doesn’t follow the story chronologically like the SHADE soundtrack does.

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

This playlist is available―with my preferred choice of Flogging Molly song―for purchase from iTunes’s iMix site: Logan's Playlist: Sucks to Be a Ghost (Sometimes). Note: I make no money off the sales of my iMixes―I just like to spread the word about bands I love.
The first song, “The End is Where We Begin” by Our Lady Peace seemed like the perfect place to start, because of the title and the way it fades in.  These lines just killed me:
Here I am
Waitin' for one last chance,
'Cuz this time we got nothing left to lose,
And everything is ruined.
But the end is where we begin.
After he dies and comes back as a ghost, Logan and Aura pick up where they left off, but in a way they’re also starting over.  They can’t touch each other, so their relationship goes back to a more innocent, pure stage, when it was all about being together and sharing the things they loved, making each other laugh.
For a while, anyway.
The line “everything is ruined” is total Logan.  He’s quick to declare disaster and blame himself for it, but just as quick to turn around and say everything will be fine―no, everything will be awesome, and he’ll be the one to make it so.
Nearly a year ago, Karen told me about Mumford & Sons, that they reminded her of Logan.  When I was writing his short story, I played their LP Sigh No More over and over, five or six times a day.  Often in tears.  Almost every track is made for Logan, and I imagine him singing different songs to different people in his life.
“Thistle and Weeds” at first seems like Logan wanting Aura to move on and stop wasting away with grief over him.
Plant your hope with good seeds.
Don’t cover yourself with thistle and weeds.
Rain down, rain down on me.
But then he screams, “I will hold on” again and again.  He can’t let go, not yet.
Interesting note?  The thistle is the national symbol of Scotland.  So maybe when Logan is telling Aura, “Don’t cover yourself in thistle and weeds,” it’s code for, “Stay away from that Scottish dude!!”  (It’s anyone’s guess who the “weeds” might be.)
Coldplay’s “Til Kingdom Come” appeared at the end of the SHADE playlist, and appears again at the beginning of SHIFT.  Aura describes it this way:
The one Logan created after he died, “Sucks to Be a Ghost (Sometimes),” was ending now, with a hushed acoustic tune. One voice, one guitar, the way he’d played for me so many times. The song was a bonus track―an afterthought for the artist, but a thread of hope for us.
A few minutes before Logan dies unexpectedly at the beginning of SHADE, he kisses her, his lips cold from drinking way too much, and whispers against her mouth, “Wait for me, Aura.”  They were his last living words.  When he disappears near the end of SHADE, he tells her not to wait for him.  He knows she needs to move on.
But she does wait, every night, listening to the mix CDs and playlists he made for her.  “Til Kingdom Come” ends like this:
I don't know which way I'm going,
I don't know what I've become.

For you, I'd wait 'til kingdom come,
Until my days, my days are done.
Say you'll come and set me free,
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me.
So time and time again, Aura and Logan hold on to each other, through life, and death, and much, much worse.
Logan will have his own short story coming in September, in the ENTHRALLED anthology.  He is very excited about that.
