Waves Hello!

Helloooooo stranger! I just haven't gotten my blogging shit together lol

Still not reading. And apprently I bake now???

I did want to touch base and get at least one more post in before the end of they year, so here's what's been happening in my little world.

I did read a whopping one book in the last few months.

My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine ~goodreads

It was cute. Maybe a 3 1/2 star read. The first half was fun but the second half kind of went out the with a whimper for me.

I just got, what I thought, was the final Heartstopper, Volume 5, only to find out there will yet another one. Which is fine. I love the series and the characters but it was supposed to end at Volume 4 and, at this point, feels like a bait and switch.

I Bake!

I am not really a great cook and especially not a great baker but apparently, I am getting better??

A pyrex measuring cup filled with rising sourdough starter
My sourdough starter is finally strong enough to bake with. I've made a focaccia and rolls. This latest feeding tripled in size so I'm going for bread next. I am a negligent starter mom so I'm kind of shocked at my success. I started with Ellie (einkorn flour) and Ryan (rye flour) way back in March and killed Ryan - he got moldy lol

Books and baking collide and I bought The Effortless Baker by Janani Elavazhagan ~goodreads at an author book signing for Gobble Up - an awesome foodie event in Portland.

She's a food blogger and food photographer and I knew I wanted to get a prettier pan to show off her recipes. I baked the Blueberry Almond Breakfast Loaf and it was delicious. And honestly, easy peasy. It's a one bowl quick bread. It just looks fancy because of the loaf pan. But you can bake right in a regular loaf pan as well.

A loaf of blueberry almond bread with a beautiful spiral pattern, dusted with powdered sugar. To the right, sits a copy of The Effortless Baker

Then I baked cookies for Kevin to bring to his office for gift day. They always request my ginger molasses cookies & I added a batch of  Peanut Butter Marshmallow Cookies by Kale Junkie. Her version was gluten and sugar free but I used regular flour for mine. I also added peanut butter chips to half the batch and mini chocolate chips to the other. OMG sooooo good! Kevin reported that the peanut butter cookies were gone in under 10 minutes and the molasses within the hour. So whew! I'm always so nervous sending in baked goods. lol

This was such a weird year with a lot of personal things going on (a few of you know about some of it and THANK YOU for being there!). We're ok but it's been a lot and I hope next year is better. I know it's been that way for a lot of you too so {{hugs}} - this is not always a joyful time of year for everyone.

I'm grateful so many of you still pop in to visit and comment or say hi elsewhere on Instagram or even texting. I'm not on anything else very much these days but I'm still not ready to permanently quit blogging for some reason.

Anyhoo...I'll end with my two goobers that help me get through the stressful times. Even if they also cause some of my stressful times lol

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

I'll see you back here in the new year - maybe, hopefully, no promises πŸ˜‚

  1. Yea!! Those PB & M cookies look AMAZING! I just sent the link to my baker friend, hoping she'll make some for me.

Happy Christmas, all the holidays, and New Year! I'll be in touch, even if you aren't here!

    1. They are ridiculously good. I'm going to make another batch for myself lol I thought adding peanut butter chips made them next level though. The mini chocolate chips weren't as good IMO.

All the best to you and your family over the holidays Jen <3

  2. I don't read anymore either. lol okay I do, just not... lately? The cookies sound fabulous, honestly.

Yeah don't leave. We're losing so many book bloggers! Have a merry christmas! :)

  4. I have been very impressed by your baking photos. It's awesome you are doing something you enjoy (and others can benefit from -- cookies are yummy!) Happy holidays, and I hope 2024 is a banner year for you!

    1. Thank you Sam. It's funny, because I find baking to be stressful, so I'm not sure why I'm doing so much of it lol

      Merry Christmas!

  5. What's with flours having names? LOL. "I killed Ryan - he got moldy" 🀣.
Glad you found something that helps you de-stress and makes you happy - love the pics! Please never leave the blogosphere, even if yours becomes a baking blog LOL (which I'm sure it won't, because you'd end up rebelling 🀣).

"this is not always a joyful time of year for everyone"
That's what most seem to forget (or make sure they do)...like on TV, in ads or talk shows...that's why my inner Grinch gets more feral than average.

"I'll end with my two goobers that help me get through the stressful times. Even if they also cause some of my stressful times lol"
πŸ˜‚ You can never win LOL.

Have a nice and cozy Christmas and a joyful 2024!

    1. When I first started reading about how to make a starter, I found out that some are decades old, and even passed down through generations, and that people name them.

I've never really liked the holidays, for my own personal reasons but I will say, it's more festive where i live now. They have so many traditions that are free! and inclusive and have nothing to do auth making money or getting more things. It's nice to see.

  6. Look at YOU, I am so impressed! The baking photos look SO good, I am glad they were a hit. And good for you for branching out and trying new things! I hope that you are having a nice holiday, and that your issues are not causing you too much stress at the moment, and I am sending you ALL the good vibes for a much less stressful 2024 ♥♥

I hope you're having a nice holiday Shannon.

  7. I'm glad you've been enjoying baking. I did a little bit of baking this year, but not a lot. I prefer baking over cooking, though. I hope you've had a wonderful Christmas and I hope your New Year's is fun and safe!

    1. I'm better at cooking, but honestly, it all stresses me out lol I'm not sure why I'm doing it so much, but I am getting more confident.
It's so nice to hear from you Jenni. Happy new years!

I tried and failed a darn cheesecake twice this xmas. It was still yummy though

  9. I didn't realize there was more Heartstopper coming. Not sure if that is a good thing or not. Guess I'll decide after I see what direction Vol 5 takes. I'm impressed by the sourdough. I find the commitment of it to be too intimidating (or annoying - one of those lol). Your breakfast loaf looks super fancy! I'm still reading plenty (although it slows this time of year) but my blogging has been virtually non-existent the last two months. Any inspiration to post seems to have vanished.

    1. Yeaaaaah... I love the book and show but it was supposed to end at 4. Then 5. Now 6. And they seem to only announce it AFTER you pre-order or closer to the release date. She says it's because she needed more time to tell the full story but it feels manipulative in a way. Bah humbug! lol

  10. 2023 was a strange year on many fronts, but I'm glad to have the connections that blogging has afforded me. Regardless of how often we post, I'm happy this little community exists!

  11. Baking is your super-power! Do it with pride. I once tried to bake and, after the Fire Dept. left, vowed never again. :)

I hope the New Year brings you happiness and success. My best wishes.

    1. Ha! Faaar from it. I find it very stressful but I do it anyway lol and I can't count how many times I've set off the fire alarm - luckily, no fire department... yet.
Happy new years to you as well Ally.

  12. It's taken me a little while to get to commenting on this as I have also been absent from blogging but unwilling to abandon it (even if it has been about 10 months before I last posted). My break actually kickstarted my reading again so I enjoy reading once more and am hesitantly attempting to blog again. I'm glad you've managed to find new things to interest you while you're not reading. I can bake a limited number of things, I have an excellent cookie receipe and fairycake recipe and have attempted blondies and brownies a couple of times. I always feel like I should be a better bake given my surname.

Happy New Year to you! Hopefully the new year gives us a fresh mindset on things.

    1. Yeah, I can't seem to fully pull the plug either lol I'm glad you enjoy reading again. I can't seem to care about either way. I do sometimes pick up a book and read a few pages before sleeping.

What is a fairycake?? It sounds delightful lol I'll have to look it up.

Baking is a super involved (messy) process for me. I am a nervous baker lol I'm still awful with pie crusts but I'm getting better at other stuff. I found Youtube videos to be the best help to me. Actually seeing live people going through the process, step by step is super helpful.

Happy New Year and it's great seeing you around again!

  14. Hello to you, too! I'm glad to see I have a buddy in being a negligent blogger, ha ha. πŸ˜„

Everyone seems to have a good feeling about going into 2024, so we shall see. 😌

I've been baking more too! Which is good because that's one of the things I cut back on my reading to do. πŸ˜ƒ

I so love seeing the two Goobers on IG they always brighten my day. πŸ€—

    Here's to a better year in 2024! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

      What have you been baking?

And the goobers thank you for their annual Christmas card!

  15. Even when I love a series, if I think it's the final book and then it's not, it really throws me off and I might get sorta irrationally annoyed lol. I've never liked cooking, but I used to someone bake cookies and brownies and things like that. Never tried baking bread, but I imagine homemade bread must take great. And ginger molasses cookies sound delicious!

    1. I was at Target today and there was ANOTHER book (a short story) to this series. I mean...it's an adorable series and I love the characters but it's kind of ridiculous at this point. And then, of course, they do new boxed sets with each addition - because your old boxed sets are now useless.
      There lies the real motivation...IMO
