Sorry I've been MIA for a bit. As most of you know, we had to put Figgy to sleep last week. I knew it was coming and I could not be more at peace with the decision or how it worked out (he lived 17 years! and got to be at home, on the deck, out in the sunshine - his most favorite place for it) but it's still hard and an adjustment so my blogging and reading roll came to an abrupt halt. (Thank you so much for all the kind words 💗 on Twitter and IG)

I'm playing a little catch-up today with TMST and hope to finish reading Roxy this week. I'm planning to do a WTF Did I Just Read? themed review post for 3 WTF books lol & a mid-year post about my audiobook challenger progress.

July 5th: Which book turned into a movie is your favorite?

Answer: I rarely watch movies/tv that are based on a book I have read. It totally ruins what I have pictured. I have Robert Pattinson burned in my brain as Edward Cullen now. He did a fine job but that wasn't what I pictured & I can't unsee it. And don't even get me started on poor Jasper and Carlisle.

So, now I either watch OR read - not both. Or I see the adaptation years later so I barely have a memory of it anyway.

A few of my favorites are Love, Simon and Heartstopper (that's a Netflix series though). I had read both years ago so it felt like it stayed true to the book/graphic novel but if it strayed - I'll never know and I enjoyed both.

I've also seen the Harry Potter movies and liked them enough. I had read the books but I was never a HUGE HP fan (sorry!) so I didn't care & I refuse to watch The Hunger Games because that is not my Peta and I don't want it ruined for me.

July 12th: Do you read graphic novels? Why or why not?

Answer: I do, a little bit anyway. I started after reading Greg's reviews of a few that were part of Kindle Unlimited so that was a nice (cheap/free) way to give them a try. I've read a few issues of Ms. Marvel, Saga, Lazarus, The Walking Dead, Pashmina, Raven, Alex & Ada and Heartstopper.

If you have Hoopla, that's another great way to try them out. I wouldn't say I'm hooked on the format But I've enjoyed what I've read so far.

  1. So for some reason your site will not let me comment with my google acct. Not sure why. It's Jen. First - MORE HUGS, LOVE, and FRIENDSHIP. Thinking of you. Second - I'm like you, I typically only read OR watch a book/movie. I've seen several movies based on books and never have read them. I can't go back and do it later. Third - I don't read a lot of graphic novels but I've read some. Do you read them on electronic devices? I can't wrap my mind around them on the smaller/e-format.

    1. Thank you - as always, you guys help pull me through the bad times {hugs back}

I read them on my older tablet which is about 12 inches. I've bought two physical copies. I don't think I could go any smaller & that could be why I don't read more. It's not my favorite but I have enjoyed several and they were free, so worth giving it a go.

  2. Sending more ((HUGS)). What a run you had with Figgy though. I never had a pet live that long. So many memories. Onto your post - my daughter always said she hated book covers with people's faces because they never matched what she imagine in her head. What you said about the adaptations reminds me of that. I go both ways - sometimes I like getting that image, but other times it's too incongruent with what I "saw". I won't read a book after seeing an adaptation though, so, there's that.

    1. I've had several live to 16 but he was my oldest. It's sad yet really satisfying when you get them to a ripe old age, relatively healthy. He had SO many problems but they didn't really seem to get him down until his last week.

My one exception seems to be Heartbreaker. I read the first issue years ago but no more than that. Just binged the series and loved it so much I bought issues 1-4. I feel like the Netflix actors and story match so well that it only enhances it. Maybe because it's a graphic novel? Like one is cartoon-ish vs *real*?

but otherwise I can't go either way with it. It's one or the other or so many years have passed I forgot lol

  3. I like some movie adaptations but quite frankly I don't trust hollywood or disney at all. I hate what they did to S2 of Bridgerton. But I have enjoyed some of the Tom Clancy adaptations and the Josh Grisham ones. And LOTR was just right for me. But I just think hollywood will ruin books most of the time because most times they don't stick to the book and then I think they are just robbing the story and it just ruins the fun out of it.

    1. I loved LOTR but I haven't read the books. I think it's tough for them sometimes because it's such a different medium and you have to appeal to more than just the book fans but it still ruins things for me.

  4. I loved Love, Simon so much. I saw it before I read the book, but I think the adaptation now that I've read the book is amazing.

I don't read many graphic novels. I like the emotion I get when I read the words. The pictures make it hard for me to get the same emotion. I do like graphic novels that have adapted my favorite books, though, because I like seeing my favorite stories come to life. :D

    1. I only started reading gn because they were free. While I enjoyed them, I can't see me reading a lot of them for the same reasons.

  5. I am so very very sorry for the loss of Figgy, but I am so glad that it was peaceful for you both, and that you are still able to cherish all the good memories. Still, loss is difficult regardless, so take care of yourself, and know I am here if you want to talk ♥♥

In regard to the book-to-movie thing, I am pretty much the same now. I usually do one instead of the other, depending. That said, I have enjoyed some! Obviously The 100 show is eons better than the book. I liked The Hunger Games movies (though the books are better hah- but I love Josh Hutcherson and wholly disagree with you on that front 😂). But shows like The Expanse, I tell myself I'll read the 10 book series someday but will I? Doubtful heh.

I really want to read all of Greg's Euro Graphic Novels™ too! I found and bought one, and really liked it, but then I couldn't find the others! I guess I'll have to look for them on Kindle, though I much prefer graphic novels in print. I also loved Saga, and Alex + Ada!

    1. Thank you Shannon.

I like Josh! He's just not my Peta and it just ruins my vision of the books.

I've watched so many adaptations without even knowing they were adaptations lol Like The Expanse. Maybe it's better that way.

  7. My condolences on your loss. 17 is a long life. When it comes to books/movies, the worst are "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues." Great books; horrendous movies. Right now I'm reading "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed and loving it. Not eager to see the film version by Reese Witherspoon. The appeal of the book (hearing the author's mind) will be lost in a simple telling of the external story. Have you read "Wild"? It was so popular I suspect you have but don't see it in your list of reviews.

    1. Thank you :-)

I've seen so few adaptations from books I've read so it's hard for me to say. I did see Wild (didn't read it) - I will say that it has more of an indie feel and not a big budget, Hollywood movie so it might be a better fit for the adaptation.

  8. I don't really picture characters really clearly when I read, so movie adaptations rarely bother me unless something is insanely changed like My Sister's Keeper. Not cool. lol

And I love graphic novels. I really need to make more time for them.

    1. I pretty much *see* the entire book. If it wasn't something I'm too invested in then I'll watch. But it forever changes how I see the book.

  9. I'm so sorry about Figgy :( 17 years is great but no matter the situation/years it's a loss. Sending you hugs <3

Yeah - I absolutely understand what you mean about movies ruining books (or vice versa). I am, however, a gluten for punishment and frequently feel the need to REREAD the books directly before watching the movies lol. It rarely goes well.

I'm not a graphic novel fan because I just don't read pictures well. But I really think I'd need the physical book if I were to read them. It's interesting that so many like them on Kindle!

Oh no! I could never read right before watching lol I have to let YEARS pass.

I can't read gn's on my kindle but I can on my larger tablet. Not my favorite way format but I've liked a few.

  10. I'm sorry to hear about Figgy. I will be keeping you in my thoughts this week <3

I also liked the HP movies well enough, but not by a conscious choice I tend to avoid watching many movies/TV shows based on books because I have been recently avoiding movies/TV shows in general. I'm curious about Heartstopper, though, because you're not the first person I've heard give it positive reviews!

I think you should give Heartstopper a try. It's good on it's own but keeps true to the spirit of the graphic novels.

  11. I'm so sorry about Figgy. 💔 As you said he had a good long life with you. That helps. ❤ HUGS. ❤

I'm sure there is an adaptation that is more favorite than these, and I'm just not thinking about it, but the 1994 adaptation of Little Women with Winona Ryder,The original Wizard of Oz, Practical Magic (this one is easy because I hated the book, ha ha), The LotRs movies, and the 1996 version of Jane Eyre with Charlotte Gainsbourg 🎬

I started reading graphic novels with Giant Days and they are still my favourites. I found them on Hoopla. 📚

    1. The movies I like that are adaptations but I've never read the books so they don't bother me.

Did you like the HP movies?

    2. Yes, I loved all the HP movies, but one (Deathly Hallows Part I). And also yes, a lot of great things did get left out, but the movies were already long and I understand why so many things were cut. Watching the extended versions helps. However, I hated them changing the way Professor Flitwick looked, and the CG for Grawp. The sexy making out "vision" of Harry and Hermione was made way steamier than the book scene and I thought it was super cheesy and out of place. Ha! ⚡

  12. Losing a pet is very difficult. So sorry for your loss.

I rarely watch movies of books that I've read. I watched Twilight and liked it but never read the books.

    1. Thank you so much Mary.

If I get far enough away in time after reading a book (Like Love Simon) I'm usually ok but if I have a vision in my mind of what things look like it's ruined forever.

  13. I have so much love for Love Simon. I read and re-read the book so many times - and listened on audio. The movie is one of my favorite adaptations ever. Ever so often I pop it in just to experience it all over. I rarely pick up graphic novels (just not my thing) but I'm so glad I gave Heartstopper a try. So precious. I got Netflix last month just so I could watch Heartstopper. Don't care about anything else on there. lol It's perfection.

    1. It's a really great adaptation! I think the movie can change some things if it captures the essence and that movie did it well.

Heartstopper IS pure perfection. I love it so much.

  14. I'm sorry about Figgy, but I'm glad he had a good life and a good send off. Have we talked before about not watching movie adaptations??? Because I always feel like I'm the only one who feels that way! But also my memory is not great sometimes lol.

  15. Oh I'm so sorry. I'm glad to hear though that you're at peace and that Figgy is as well. Sending lots of best wishes...

I wasn't super fond of whats-his-dude as Peeta either. I don't even know why. We really do have an image in our head, don't we, and when the adaptation gets it "wrong" it can be bothersome ha!

Ooh thanks for the shout out! I kinda miss Alex and Ada. And those crazy ones I was reading for a while. :)
