My Monday Musings...

Reading & listening:

Here to Stay by Adriana Herrera – ARC - This is sweeter and less edgy (so far) than Herrera’s American Dreamer series but I’m enjoying it – reading outside with a cold drink. Good summer reading.

Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You: A Remix – I already read an arc of this in print but now I’m listening to it on audio via the library and it was good but it’s next level great on audio with Reynolds narrating.

The Michelle Obama Podcast on Spotify – Michelle’s calm voice, empathetic and pragmatic outlook are like a balm to my soul. Her podcasts are like my moment of zen.

Read:

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkin Reid – I have a review for this one posting Thursday!

The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert – I listened to this ALC (advanced listening copy) via libro.fm. It was cute but the audio didn’t really work for me. The women’s voice for Marva sounded more MG than a girl who was 18 and worried about voting and going to college. But…

This would be a great book for teens who will be voting for the first time or just now getting involved in politics. It shows a lot of the obstacles and challenges to voting and why issues that don't necessarily pertain to you are still worth getting involved in.

And liking/not liking narrators voices is highly subjective.

Upcoming:

I have an ALC of The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones and I’m pondering starting it this week. I’m a little hesitant because there are multiple incidences of animal abuse.

Another libro.fm ALC offering that I’m considering is Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko. I’m not usually a fantasy reader but I tend to be able to listen to genres on audio that I can’t stick with in print and I hear nothing but great things about this one from readers I trust.

What are you all reading this week? Any recommendations for me?

    2. Yep, I read Daisy Jones last March (of 2019, I mean) and I loved it. I was sucked right into the story of Daisy and the band. TJR made them feel so real!

  2. Looks like you have some good books there, I have heard good things about Herrera--love reading outside!! I don't do it too much in the summer time since I get heat stroke in the heat, but fall and spring I definitely do.

    1. We just had a heatwave and I hid inside lol but mostly we have cooler afternoons or at least a nice breeze so I can sit outside a lot in the summer.

    1. You should read her! Her books are so smart and sexy!

Not gonna lie - last weeks episode bummed me out. But she was in despair so that made me fall into despair but I still love hearing her and feeling like there's a grain of hope.

  4. I can see Michelle's podcasts being so relaxing. We need sensible people these days lol. And I hope the Only Good Indians is good. Seems like I've seen a few good reviews for it. But yeah I'm not a fan of animal abuse either.

    1. Yeah - it's like finally having an adult to listen to and one with empathy.

I'm not sure how much abuse there is. One or two scenes I might be able to get past but I hear there's a dog one and...I don't know.

    1. I'm not sure just how dark it gets in regards to that so we'll see. It's audio too so it's not like I can skim.

  6. I just learned the other day that Michelle Obama has a podcast. It sounds super relaxing! LOL I do love listening to her speak, and she's just so smart and empathetic. Glad you've been enjoying most of your books too! I'm reading an ARC of Traitor at the moment and loving it!

    1. I just find her attitude so calming. She's talking about tough subjects in the podcast but it feels like finally having an adult int he room lol

I'll have to look up Traitor.

  7. The Only Good Indians is a good read, but there are some pretty descriptive instances of animal abuse. I was able to skim through a few parts about dogs, but I'm not sure how you'll be able to do that in audio.

  9. I haven't been reading anything at all this week. I've been slothing around the house watching films and TV! I might manage a new Paddington adventure that I grabbed but I'm too tired this week!

    1. I'm not a huge podcast listener but I enjoy hers. There are only 3 eps so far.

I'm doing well Ro. How about you?

  12. I really need to read Here to Stay, I don’t know why I keep distracting myself with other reads first. I also really want to listen to Michelle Obama’s podcast, I always need new podcasts to listen to, I still need to listen to the audiobook I have of her book though. Sorry to hear the narrator didn’t sound totally the right for Voting booth, I have that on my Scribd listen list so I’ll be warier going in. I know audiobook narrators are personal opinion but good to be aware all the same.

    1. Narrators are definitely personal preference. She had a great voice - it just made the character sound so young and naive lol

I finished Here to Stay and despite a few quibbles I really enjoyed it. She's a favorite author of mine.

  14. I was gonna ask what an ALC was, and then you answered lol. My library has both The Only Good Indians and Raybearer in audiobook, and I've tagged them to try when the wait list goes down since I've heard great things too! Glad you're enjoying your current reads/listens.

  15. I definitely want to give Michelle's podcast a go, even though I am scared of podcasts, she's worth it haha. Also, I want to read both Only the Good Indians and Raybearer, so I am VERY excited to hear your thoughts!
