My Monday Musings…

My reading is still sporadic. I read ALL the books for a week - then nothing and now multiple books at once - so I’m going to continue doing a book-ish round up on Monday’s and a life-ish post later in the week & not worry too much about posting more than that unless the mood strikes.

#summerbrainblogging

Here’s what’s up in my readerverse…

READ:

*I’m linking to my Goodreads reviews/very brief thoughts

Riven by Roan Parrish – 4 stars ~ Goodreads

Prince of Killers by Layla Reyne – 3 stars (but I struggled with this one) ~ Goodreads

Death Prefers Blondes by Caleb Roehrig (yes, I FINALLY finished this one!) – 3.5 stars (5 stars for originality and heisty fun! but a few quibbles lowered my rating a bit) ~ Goodreads

Rave by Kami Garcia – 4.5 stars Hoopla has a great selection and app for reading comic books/graphic novels so I’m dipping my toes in. Raven was a lot of fun and had a beautiful artistic style that was easy for me to follow. ~ Goodreads

READING:

Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Cole – this is my audiobook listen. I’ve had the hardcover for a while but I’m loving JaQwan J. k\Kelly’s narration so far. ~ Goodreads

The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez – library e-book read. I had to shuffle my TBR around when this hold came in early.  ~ Goodreads

Lazarus, Vol.1: Family – I asked for graphic novel rec’s on Instagram and a friend said this was a good one. It’s a dystopian, near future, sci-fi series with a kick ass heroine and it’s pretty fantastic so far. ~ Goodreads

NETGALLEY:

Both of these don’t release until November so I wont’ be reading them right away but YAY! for approvals lol

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams (Publication date – November 5th) ~ Goodreads

Not the Girl you Marry by Andie J. Christopher (Publication date – November 12th) ~ Goodreads

NEW PAPERWHITE!!

Look at the pretty precious!

I really struggled with whether to buy this or not. My *old* paperwhite was only 2 years old but I wanted the new flush screen/waterproof design. Figment drools all over me when I’m reading and it gets yucky in the grooves.

Move the cat instead of getting a new Kindle, you say….you obviously don’t own a cat, I reply.

Anyway…I asked Twitter to help me decide and of course you are ALL ENABLERS telling to me to go for it so I caved. But the most magical thing happened!!!

After I factored in the sale price, trade-in, another discount for Prime Day, a $10 credit from Whole Foods (another Prime Day deal), and a git card I had on account – I got it for FREEEEEEEE with a $15 credit to my account left over. It was as if they paid me to get it! So score!

What are you all reading this week?

Do you have any comic book/graphic novel rec’s? What is the difference between the two?

Have an awesome week everyone!

Shit happens.
It just pisses me off
more on Mondays.

    1. It's really good!

I would have kept my Kindle forever if it wasn't for the cat and it being a great deal.

    Or a super-clingy one 😂.

I don't think graphic novels are for me. I need WORDS...lots of them LOL. My eyes skim over the images, it doesn't matter how pretty or artistic or detailed. Maybe I'm just too impatient...

    1. He's getting fairly independent here! He just came in from a little walk in our back yard area.

I've struggled a lot with GN's. The dialogue moves too fast for me and the characters are often underdeveloped but Raven was good and this Lazarus I'm reading now has pretty detailed character arc's.

  3. I want to read Roan Parrish! I just heard about this author recently. You're lucky to have gotten Bromance and Not the Girl You Marry! And yay for a new kindle and for free! That's amazing! Something similar happened to my husband with his kindle :)

    1. Her books don't always work for me but when they do - I love them. My favorite was a super cute novella in the Exposed anthology - Natural Enemies.

      Free Kindles FTW lol

  4. Congrats on the free Paperwhite! That’s an awesome deal. I also have a Paperwhite, but it’s old, and I barely use it because I prefer paper books.

    1. I have a lot of physical arc's I'm making my way through now so I've been using the Kindle mostly for library/review reads but I like both depending on what I
      m reading.

  6. I cackled at that ecard. Things really are worst on Mondays. Your new paper white is lovely. Enjoy it! That's awesome that you had so many deals, that it was free. Yee-haw! I have three Kindles right now. I should trade one in or something. I hope you like The Friend Zone. I personally loved it, but some people were not happy with some of it.

    1. We're probably already dreading the new week so one bad thing pushed us over the edge lol

I had mixed feelings about The Friend Zone - not about the ending though - which I know upset a lot of people.

  7. Wow- free!! Plus a credit haha- that's a good deal! Congrats! No wonder you didn't send it my way this time. :)

    Death Prefers Blondes sounds fun.

Comics vs graphic novels- well to me comics are just the actual, individual comics like you get at a comic store, while GN's are more like collections of certain issues. Like in the Barnes & Noble GN section or whatever- you'll see lots of collected editions, and frankly I prefer those because they go on the shelf like a book and come in either hardcover or softcover, depending on the GN.

I don't know if you're interested in ComiXology or not, but they have a 30 day free trial I think and are owned by Amazon, so it's convenient. You can read a ton of comics/ GN's there. All the European stuff I've been reading I found through ComiXology- Golden City is my favorite right now and is sort of a dystopian/ post apoc with beautiful art. There's some info about ComiXology here. https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/comixology-unlimited-cost-app/

    1. Thanks for the info. I guess I'm reading graphic novels then lol

      I've been reading volumes.

I explored the freebies that came with Amazon Prime before but the library has a much better collection. It's a good way to test them out before trying something like ComiXology. If I keep going with it I will probably subscribe because it's too expensive to buy individually.

  8. I've just finished reading a zombie series that I started years ago and I'm pleased to get it done. Now I need to look at finishing off a few challenges so I can concentrate on other stuff come autumn!

  9. Thanks for the beads up on Raven. I almost borrowed it from Hoopla this morning, but I wasn't quite sure I would like it. I'll probably borrow it next month. 📚

You go on combining those sales and discounts, girl! That was awsome. 👍✨

  11. SWEET! That is an amazing score! One day I'll get a new kindle. I still have the one that had the keyboard at the bottom. LOL Yea, I do still use it but usually use the app instead. You will have to let us know if you like the new paperwhite.

  13. I loved Riven, and I want to read Raven, so I'm glad you liked that too. I'm glad you're loving your new Kindle, and it's so awesome you basically got it for free! I think of comics as individual issues - they are sometimes put together in a book format later on. Graphic novels are just that - a novel but told in the graphic format. I don't know if that's accurate or not, but it's kind of what I go by.

  14. Glad you found a comic you liked on Hoopla! Pretty soon I'll be getting recs fomr you ;-) I feel like, aside from Saga, I haven't had the best of luck with comics on Hoopla. Nimona didn't blow me away but was good, maybe check that one out?

I haven't read anything I disliked yet but maybe a few I don't care if continue or not.

I do need to catch up with Saga.

  15. Oh my goodness! FREE?!? I missed out on Prime day. I kinda figured it would be like their black friday deals which are nothing but crap now. I'm gonna have to check it out next time though. So many people got amazing things for cheap... or free this year. Congrats on your new Kindle.

    1. I think their deals are getting very specific. Amazon products are where the deals are.

And the Kindle deal kept getting better as I was checking out lol I had checked the trade-in value a few months ago and it was only $15 but during Prime days it was $25 plus 25% credit, plus a $25 gc. O_O

  16. FREE! How lucky was that! Is there a big difference between them other than the waterproof element? I've had my Paperwhite for almost two years come this Christmas, before that I had the HD Fire which destroyed my eyesight. We have Amazon in Australia now too but it's pretty crap if I'm honest. Hopefully with your new reader, it'll help you get back into reading again Karen!

    1. I had the Fire and ended up selling it to a friend. I had the same problem - plus the glare.

I don't think there is that big a difference to be honest. The screen in completely flat as well. That's why I got it. Figment drools on me lol and it leaves crud in the grooves.

  19. Wow! Scoring anything electronic for FREE is hot, hot, hot! Kudos and congrats to you for that, and to have something left over is pretty amazing. I'm still reading more than I have been over the years, but even though I'm reading mostly thrillers, I managed to read quite a few romance novels too. Jill Shalvis and a few others were calling my name. Hope your day is fantastic! Hugs, RO

  21. What a sexy new kindle! I've had a super minor crack on my kindle for the past two years and now I'm tempted to upgrade. I think Amazon will give me a 25% off discount.

How is Friend Zone? Do I need to pick it up?

  23. Congrats on the new paperwhite! I'd love to read more about it; I have a fire that's about 5 (maybe even 6) years old at this point and I keep thinking it's time to trade in. I can't have the internet weigh in though; a bunch of enablers, like you said, HA! It looks pretty though and I think if you read often enough, it's totally worth it! PS: That is an amazing deal!

Totally want to read Death Prefers Blondes. Is it bad I judge a book by it's title and cover? :)
