Gross words

I subscribe to What I Learned Today by ThoughtCo. & learn something new - delivered to my inbox - every day. Today it was Words Everyone Hates to Say.

Moist was #2 (hate is #1 which seems weird to me). I know that’s a word a lot of people hate to hear but mine is….SLUICE.

I see that word a lot in romance - a hero sexily sluicing in the shower - and I don’t know why but it squicks me out lol

Panties was on the list too and yeah – I do not like the word panties.

Is there a word that you dislike?

*btw- the term for a strong dislike for a particular word is called longomisia

New camera & adventuring

I bought a new camera for my birthday back in April and I’m finally starting to use it. It’s a Nikon D7200 and pretty intimidating! Luckily, it has a lot of auto settings until I learn to master ISO and all that.

We went on a hike to Mount St. Helens this past weekend and here are a few shots.

If you don’t know already Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano that erupted in 1980. You can go here to see what it looked like the day before the eruption. The eruption reduced the mountain from 9,677 ft to 8,363 ft.

It’s been over 30 years but the area is still completely devastated around the mountain. You can see how far away we are before even the smallest amount of growth is starting to come back. Wildflowers, small trees…

There was a trail on the outer edge that I started walking with Kevin but got totally freaked out by the height and being so close to the edge and had to turn around (I am super afraid of heights!) but we did go on a nearby trail that went through the forest. Hey - I'd rather be attached by recently spotted mountain lion than falling off a ledge! 😜

It’s miles away from the mountain but you can still see the impact. Rocks that were blasted over are still strewn around, water from glaciers that were exposed from the eruption now make this area seem like a rain forest. Very cool!

And the Forest Service replanted over 10 MILLION trees on over 14,000 acres to help the area recover.

This picture was from may when there was still snow. The trees are lined up so perfectly that it looked like a fake Hallmark movie set lol

That's all I've got for today - trying to stay cool like everyone else. The PNW is in a rare heatwave. 90's for a few days but we should be back down in the 70's by tomorrow.

  1. Moist seems to be the word that everyone loves to hate but I just don’t get it. At all. And sluice? It’s one I rarely ever encounter. I truly dislike the word problematic. Not in the way that I icks me out just in the way that I find it insanely overused and annoying. It’s just so very trendy (and ever so slightly self-righteous IMO) so call every tiny little thing problematic. Gah!

    1. I don't get moist either but I've never really thought about it lol

Don't even get me started on overused words! That's a whole other thing lol

  2. Sluice is a weird word, for sure. :)

You know which word irritates me? Orientated haha. Because sometimes in a book I see the word oriented and sometimes it's orientated, and I'm like- which is it? Does everyone just pick whichever one they like better lol?

Mt. St Helens would be awesome to hike, I would think, although with my luck that's when it would choose to go active again haha!

    1. I have NO idea why it bothers me but it does lol

I had never even noticed the two spellings before. now I'm curious.

My husband works with a guy who was a kid when it erupted. They used to go fishing up there every weekend and they were on their way up when it started and his mom slammed the car in reverse and went backwards all the way down. How scary is that??!!!

From what I've been reading Mt Rainier is the one to watch now.

  3. It looks so lovely! I do want to hike there too. I have not been on a real hike since I was preggo!

I can't think of a word now, but I am sure it is a romance one, they are just so strange at times

    1. You seem to have such beautiful scenery around you though!

Romance is right up there with strange words lol We could do a whole post on just body parts.

  4. The word muggy annoys me, because my mother over uses it. I actually ban the word and gave her 10 other options.

  6. People really do hate the word moist, but it doesn't bother me. I guess it might depend on context or something. I'd love to get a nicer camera someday. I've always enjoyed taking photos. You have some great shots here!

    1. I guess I have always associated it positively with food so I don't get grossed out lol

I really need to learn how to use the camera better!

  7. My brother is still yelling at me every year to go to Mt. St.Helens and we still haven’t gotten up there. I think because the kids were little and now we just don’t have an excuse need to go. Loved your pictures. So glad you are getting out and enjoying your new home.

    1. It' super close to us - less than 45 minutes so we've been all around the area on the weekends but that's the first time we've been up to the top because the road was closed until mid-May.

Silverlake (where the Mount St. Helens visitor center is) is one of my favorite places for shorter hikes.

  9. Ugh I'm with you on the gross words! I don't want to think of anyone sluicing! *shudders* I would love to visit Mt St Helen's! I've had a fascination for volcanoes since I was a kid but only ever got to visit one-My Teide in Tenerife. Italy is way too expensive to visit so I better win the lottery!

    1. It's a gross word right??!! lol

This mountain is only abut 1/2 hour away! Which is cool - but a little scary lol

  10. Somewhere in a box or chest I have a babyfood jar of Mt. St Helen's ash. My grade school teacher grew up nearby and went home to help her folks and brought back each of us some ash. No idea why I kept it all these years. I've been to Craters of the Moon in Idaho where lava took out huge swatches of the land and covered it in black rocky sand, but some day I'll go visit Mt. St. Helen's.

Pretty sure there are several words used to describe sexual organs in romance books that I shudder over, but my brain is blanking. I think its not so much certain words as much has how they are used in a sex scene that squicks me out.

    1. That's so funny!

It's so interesting how desolate it is even 30 years later. All those trees int he last picture are only there because we planted them. On it's own -t here are only patches of small trees and plants except where the glacier melted but that's mostly fens and lush plants.

  11. I can handle almost any word. I hate to see words used to hurt anyone. I've been on trails near Mt. St. Helen but I've not had the chance to hike up it.

  13. WTF is SLUICE. I literally have never seen that word, but it's pretty gross. Not as ick as moist or panties (EW EW EW need a mental bath!) but up there, for sure.

Your photos are lovely. I've never been before, but would love to go for a hike. I'd totally stay away from the edge too. I like my limbs where they are :)

Hope you have a great weekend, love!

  14. I have a friend who hates the word moist (I have no idea why) and she also hates when you say someone is getting intimate (because sex apparently a nice way to refer to it) and I've another friend who hates when you refer to your significant other as partner. I mean, I don't get hating words, they're just words, it's the meaning that you put behind them that matters.

And very cool pictures, check you out treating yourself to a fancy camera. I totally wish I was more into photography because it seems like an awesome skill to have. Good luck learning all the settings because you know it will be worth it when you do. It is also a great excuse to take some more cool walks to take pictures, and really an excuse to get out the house anywhere.

  15. Pretty pictures! I really need a new camera. I've been limited to my phone since my last camera died. :(

Moist makes me giggle. I don't like it but people REALLY seem to hate it and that's why I laugh so much. Everytime I see it, I think of all the people who are going NOPE! lol

  19. "sexily sluicing in the shower" was so unexpected that I laughed out loud lol. There are specific words I hate in the context of romance novels, but I'm not sure if there any words I just hate in general. That's interesting about the volcano. Your photos are beautiful though!

  20. Mount St. Helens is spectacular Karen! Seeing all the wildflowers and new vegetation growing in and around the area is beautiful to see. Is it something you're concerned about, another eruption or is it relatively safe now with the partial collapse.

I hate the word moist but how does one sexily sluice? I've only ever heard the term in regards to people mining for gold and now I'm imagining a old, half naked man washing himself slowly in a creek bed. Eww. Damn it Karen.

  21. Yeah I don't like moist for things other than cake. It makes me think of humid and the things humidity does to you and that is in no way at all sexy to me. lol

Slide bothers me. He slid into her. I can't quite explain it and I know it's a rational choice of words but it I guess makes me think slither and it just...nope.

    Very nice pictures!

I hate the word "squat". 😆
