TBB asks: july–vacation edition

The Blended Blog hosts TBB Asks the first Monday of every month. Feel free to join in and link up on their blog!

1. Will you go on vacation this year?

We just came back from NOLA. That was for ALA but we did do some sightseeing. And I’m pretty sure we’ll take another trip to either Asheville, NC or maybe home to RI in the fall.

2. Do nothing but relax or pack it all in vacation?

A happy medium. We usually do a little hiking during the day – nothing too crazy - and then I’m in bed by 7 or 8 pm lol

3. What month do you like to vacation?

ALA was June but it was a conference. I would never CHOOSE to travel – especially to NOLA – in June. We like to travel in spring or fall when it’s cooler. Mostly because we bring the dogs and it’s easier when we don’t have to worry about them as much.

4. Cruise: YES or NO?

I kind of like the idea of a cruise. everything is in one spot. There might be a few stops for the day but the crowds and diseases (norovirus) kind of freak me out.

And I’m claustrophobic so I have no idea how I’ll feel in the cabin or if I want to get off the ship and can’t. So no, I guess...but maybe.

5. Favorite vacation tradition?

I don’t think we have a tradition. Maybe always pack sandwiches, chips and snacks for that first day of driving.

6. Most memorable vacation?

We used to travel to a pet friendly B&B in Boone, NC years ago. One year we went at Christmas time and had the whole place to ourselves with our 3 shelties. It was decorated for the holidays and had a huge fireplace and balconies overlooking the mountains. That was really nice.

And our recent trip to Asheville, NC with Fonzi because the place is SO pet friendly we could go anywhere without worrying about taking him. And the food is amazing there!

We always have an amazing time in NYC for BEA.

7. Pack light or pack it all?

I’m a pack light kind of girl. Kevin is a pack everything just in case kind of guy. lol

If we go to a place more than once, then we have a feel for the area and where we can pick up things if needed and tend to pack lighter.

When we take the dogs – that’s a whole other thing. I try to pack for any potential emergency and the dogs end up with more luggage than I have.

8. Hotel, condo or house?

I’ve always stayed at hotels except for that B&B.

9. Favorite things to eat on vacation?

You follow my blog regularly right? So you know my answer will be EVERYTHING lol

Eating is one of my main focuses when I vacation.

I check out Eater first when I go to big cities. – they are an incredible resource for good eats. And find out what locals eat then follow the places on Instagram – which usually leads to more local recommendations.

10. Warm or cold destination?

I like cooler but not cold weather. I can get out more but not have to pack heavy winter gear. If Kevin had his way we would go somewhere frigid in the dead of winter. He misses snow.

  1. I've always wanted to go on a cruise, since my friends who have said that it's awesome. You pose a good point about it being jam-packed with people, though. My inner claustrophobic (like you!) is dying inside.

    1. It seems fun but I'm not sure I can survive a small cabin and crowds lol

  2. Quotes:

Haha, your "real life" posts are always entertaining. That bit about eating, too ("You follow my blog regularly right? So you know my answer will be EVERYTHING lol").

I live vicariously...I can't see any vacation for me in the foreseeable future 😥.

    1. We went a couple of decades without being able to vacation so it's been fun even if most of them have been more book rather than R&R related.

  3. I wish I had been there with you all at ALA. Someday. I never thought I would enjoy a sit around vacation, but my first cruise changed my mind. Sitting still, while the boat brings me to wonderful places is fantastic.

    1. I like sitting around. If it were up to me I would just walk from restaurant to restaurant lol Kevin is the one who needs to hike or whatever :-)

    1. I just let him pack it all because I know the day I make him stop will be the day we need that ONE THING and he'll be able to say I told you so lol

These days I won't vacation anywhere that doesn't have great food.

    1. I have a love/hate thing with vacations. It seems like a good idea until it's time to go lol But once I get there I like it but after 3-ish days I'm done and want to be home again.

  6. Vacation is definitely all about eating awesome food. I have to try new things when I go places!
I only like going on vacation to hot places if it involves a pool or beach.

    1. It seems the book conferences are always in the dog days of summer which sucks. I prefer cool-ish. Like fall weather.

  7. Oh wow, that B&B sounds amazing and how fun you had it all to yourself (and the dogs) for Christmas one year. I'd love that! I like going places that aren't too hot or too cold. You're right - you can get out and do more without worrying about wearing tons of clothes, or for the heat, dealing with that nastiness. LOL

    1. Unfortunately, it's closed now but we went for a few years and it was amazing and so relaxing.

It's awful when we pack for NYC. You never know what the weather will be so you need a little bit of everything lol

  8. I much prefer travelling in the cooler weather!

  9. I'll have to do this sometime- these posts are fun. :) I love to eat on vacation too, lol, it's always fun to try new places! Why eat the same stuff or the same places as at home??

Boone and Asheville both sound great!

Vacations are ALL about the food for me lol

  10. Ha! Just did all the packing and planning for our trip. I'm fine once I'm away, but I hate getting ready. Definitely cold destinations. Not sure I'd do well on a cruise though I do like to vacation by the water.

    Great tag, Karen!

  11. I just got back from a week on the Oregon Coast. So relaxing, I already want to go back. We always rent a beach house for the week so we can cook, which saves money since we dont’ have to eat out, plus I like having a quiet place. I think we are done traveling for awhile. I have been to Idaho and the Coast, time to spend some time at home!

  12. The way I used to vacay and the way I would vacay now are so different lol. Like, I used to love cruises, but now I wouldn't want to go on one. Wow, that memory of the B&B does sound amazing! And that's awesome to find dog friendly places. But ugh, no, boooo cold destinations :-P

    1. Thanks! We hadn't vacationed in years because we had too many animals and because of work related reasons but we've been trying to do more 4 day mini vacations.

  16. We did a cruise once an it was a lot of fun. It really didn't feel too cramped either which was surprising. There were people but those ships are so dang big there was plenty of room without feeling too crowded :)
