Product review: Prime Surprise Sweets Dash Button

20170629_111526
I received an invite for the Prime Surprise Sweets Dash Button from Amazon and thought I’d give it a try and then share what the box was like in case you’re curious.

The basics:
The Prime Surprise Sweets is exclusively for Prime members and by invite only. You can request and invitation by clicking in the button below.

The dash button costs $4.99 and then you connect with it your Wi-Fi and push the button whenever you want a new box of treats. The $4.99 credit is applied to your first Surprise box.

Each Surprise Sweets box costs $18 delivered with free two day shipping and is filled with small-batch, artisan crafted treats. And it’s a surprise – so you won’t know in advance what you’ll be getting there is no way to manage dietary restrictions.

In other words - you get what they send you.

You can click the button for a new box anytime you’d like. Every day – once a month – once every few months…you get the idea.

So here’s what was in my first box:

The dash button comes first and you need to connect it to your Wi-fi – then push the button for your first order!

My first box came with four treats and a has a sheet that explains all the products and the history of the companies whose products are included in your box. I really liked that touch. Websites are included so you can check them out further.

Here’s what I got:

Cape Whoopies – chocolate chip vanilla whoopie pie.

Verdict – delish! The cake was soft and moist – didn’t crumble and the cream filling was yummy. Tasted and had a feel a bit more like marshmallow than cream.

big picture farm – raspberry rhubarb caramels.

Verdict – I LOVE caramels and these were sooooog good. Soft and creamy with just a hint of fruity flavor. My favorite treat from this box. I think I’ll be ordering more things from them after looking at their website.

Albina city nuts – candied pecans

Verdict: I'm not a huge fan of candied fruit or nuts (or pecans) but these were pretty good. Not overly sweet with a very mild salty taste. While these weren’t the right fit for me – I would be interested in trying something else by them because the quality was still excellent.

Grey Ghost Bakery – chocolate chip cookies

Verdict: I’m super picky about chocolate chip cookies and these just tasted average to me. Kevin thought they were too sweet and that might be due to the added crunchy sugar sprinkled on top. They weren’t bad but not anything I would go out of my way to order for myself or as a gift.

Final Surprise Box verdict:

Pros: Well, I really like surprises and I love to eat so that was fun! lol

The quailty and variety of the products was excellent.

The portions were pretty good. Only one whoopie pie but it was large, the cookies, caramels and pecans were all full size and several servings.

Cons: The cost. At $18 this isn’t something I would get every often. I guess it’s comparable to other snack boxes – my Graze snack boxes are $13.99 per box and the Surprise boxes are more “gourmet” so would cost more. There is also the one time cost of the dash button – but it is applied to your first order.

These are NOT healthy snacks. They’re for indulging. Not a bad thing but maybe not a good thing for your waistline.

No way to limit ingredients. I would expect that to be a big problem/limiting factor for a lot of people.

You need to have a Prime subscription to even be invited.

I think I’ll probably get a box every few months when I feel like I deserve a treat! I liked the variety and the quality and it’s super easy to order.

So thumbs up for me!

  1. It's a fun idea, but yeah, I think it's limiting on what you can get based on dietary restrictions. Besides that it's a fun treat here and there. Thanks for sharing! I'm glad you really liked most of the box.

    1. Maybe they'll add something like that in the future. It seems like it would keep a lot of potential buyers away.

    1. Me too! And luckily I liked almost all of it.

  3. I really love the idea of this. It's unfortunate that they don't have a way to manage dietary restrictions. My daughter has a couple food allergies so this probably wouldn't work out for me. It does sound like a really fun way to try new treats tho!

    1. I know. Although I don't have any restrictions, I hope they add a way to work with people who do.

  4. This sounds like a fun idea but I would want to customize what things I could potentially receive. I mean, what if you have a nut allergy? I think I would rather take $20 and walk down the junk food aisle selecting new-to-me treats at random when I have a sweet tooth. That way, if I ever came across something that I loved, I could get it at a reasonable price instead of having to special order it. But then again, I'm cheap so... LoL

    1. I don't have any allergies and I love almost everything so it's a fun way to find new treats but I agree, there should be some way to at least limit ingredients for allergies/vegetarian/vegan etc...

And the cost is high so I doubt I'll do this often. Maybe for holidays as a treat.

  5. I had wondered if these boxes would be worth it. I don't have Prime anymore but I used to get the other Prime boxes they had when I did.

    1. I don't know if it's worth it unless you have money to spend. lol It was great but very pricey. If you don't like something it would be a complete waste of almost $20.

I did think this particular box was worth it but to do on a regular basis...shrug

  7. Not great for those with nut allergies too. I love surprise boxes but usually they arrive with a few things you wouldn't normally eat and it goes to waste. Would be great if you could substitute, like perhaps a chocolate box or even a little survey before hand so they can cater to things you would eat. Probably great as a gift though. Great review Karen, so glad you were able to enjoy a few of the goodies <3

    1. It's pretty limiting since you can't substitute for dietary restrictions.

it's a new thing so maybe they will tweak it over time.

  9. That is really fun! I think I'll stick to my VeganCuts box, though. Its similar in that everything is a surprise and cost the same but has probably 4 times the items. The idea of the Amazon is a lot of fun but goodness that's really pricey for only 4 items.

    1. I priced the things out individually and because they come from small company/small batch places it's a deal but yes, still very pricey for snacks.

It's probably just going to be a special treat thing for me. I also use Graze.

  10. Fun twist on a popular idea! I think I'd accidentally wind up clicking the button and overdrawing my bank account, LOL! Those snacks do sound yummy. I'd definitely have to make it a once-in-awhile thing as well. Kinda pricey, but expected for gourmet treats :)

  14. I have never even heard of this! How fun! I love the idea that you choose how often to get it by just pressing the button. I admit I'd probably press that button way more often than I should! Good to know the snacks are delicious as well.

  15. I like the idea of getting a surprise treat box, and I tend to limit my sweets, so this would be really fun as an indulgence every now and then. Also everything you got sounds amazing (especially that whoopie pie!).
