Real life gets in the way...

Real life got in the way this week. I was sick, my very good friend had to put her dog to sleep. Her sheltie has been coming over here to play with my guys since they were puppies so it was like losing one of my own. And Fonzi decided to eat a bouquet of flowers which sent us to the ER to induce vomiting – he’s still a little queasy but I caught him in the act and got him to the vet in time!

So my planned reviews and Friday Fast 5 aren’t happening this week but I wanted to mention a few great books I read (I’m still planning on reviewing them!) and a cover reveal.

Read and LOVED!

2910289629283884

Bad Romance by Heather Demetrios ~ Goodreads Gut wrenching and brutally honest portrayal of an abusive relationship. A MUST READ.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenizie Lee ~ Goodreads Vice! Virtue! Romance! Adventure! This book was a lot of fun and touches on a lot of topics, such as racism, sexism, homosexuality during the 18th century, in a really great way.

Cover reveal:

I beta read an early version of this and loved it. It’s wild, unconventional and I totally fell in love with a ship. A SHIP. lol Nadim – a sentient ship that hosts a revolving team of humans to explore the universe – was a fascinating character!

HonorAmongThieves-hc-768x1160

Honor Among Thieves by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre ~ Goodreads

Zara Cole has been in and out of New Detroit’s rehab facilities for treatment of her antisocial disorder. There’s no adjusting Zara’s attitude, though. A painful past has made her stronger than most, which is why she chose life in the Zone instead moving with her family to Mars. In her eyes, living inside a dome isn’t much better than a prison cell.

Still, when Zara commits a crime that has her running scared, jail might be exactly where she’s headed. Instead Zara is recruited into the Honors, an elite team of humans selected by the Leviathan–a race of sentient alien ships—to explore the outer reaches of the universe as their passengers.

Zara seizes the chance to flee Earth’s dangers, but when she meets Nadim, the alien ship she’s assigned to along with fellow Honor Beatriz, Zara starts to feel at home for the first time, along with a devotion she’s never experienced before. Yet nothing—not her Honors training or her street smarts—could have prepared her for the dark, dangerous truths that lurk behind the glitter of starlight.

Honor Among Thieves is the first book in a daring new sci-fi series by bestselling authors Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre.

You can check out an excerpt here

So that’s it….hopefully I can pull things together enough to resume blogging next week!
And this is why you shouldn’t be a panster blogger kids lol One thing goes wrong and you’ve got nothing. Ha!

Public service message from Fonzi:  don't eat flowers or you'll get sick, the parent's will panic and they'll bring you to the vet to make you vomit. *sad puppy face*

  1. You might have managed to get me interested in a book, so your week can be accounted as a success! ;D
I get a vague TARDIS-vibe from the sentient ship - plus I loved the excerpt, and there's no romance in sight, at least for now (though I know the authors usually include plenty of it in their books). Of course, this is a trilogy, which can go so well or so bad, if you know what I mean. But I'm tentatively including HAT in my TBR list. At least it's sci-fi! It's all about fantasy/retellings nowadays, and I'm not a fan of those.
(P.S.: you fell in love with a ship? That made me smile because...you're "shipping" a ship+girl relationship? LOL).

I hope you that have recovered nicely, and that crazyhead Fonzi has learned his lesson! Poor thing, but poor you too. Always panicking about your furry babies.

    1. Whoever said pets lower blood pressure hasn't met mine lol

Well, I read an earlier version so it may have changed a bit since then, but there isn't much romance in this one. And it's with a ship so it's different but both authors are pretty good at writing romance that still leaves all parties pretty independent & individual from the romance.

I'm taking shipping to it's limits! lol Shipping the ship. But I loved the ships - I know it sounds weird but they are so complex and fascinating!

    1. I would have let him just ride it out but the Lilies can be toxic and I didn't want to wait until everyone is closed up for the day just in case it was bad.

      Hes MUCH better today.

  4. Oh man hope you feel better and Fonzi too. Sorry about your friend's dog too. Bad Romance is one I definitely want to read. I think she is an awesome author and this sounds so good.

  5. Sorry to hear about your friend's and your loss. It's tough losing a fur baby. I know I've panicked over my babies a time or two. So I would have been right there with you rushing my dog to the vet if he got into something. Life happens though, don't worry about it. I try to schedule out posts a week or two out but even then life can sometimes creep up on you and throw you off course. :)

    1. It's sad. She was besties with one of my dogs that I lost last Ocotber to the same thing (kidney disease).

We caught Fonzi in time so while he wasn't thrilled to be forced to vomit lol that was the worst of it and he's fine today.

  6. So sorry to hear about your friend's pup, and yours. That just sucks all the way around. I didn't realize dogs could get so sick from eating flowers, did I read that right? The books you listed sound awesome. Bad Romance has got my interest peaked, even though the title is a song. I usually hate that. I hope the rest of your week is better!

    1. The song does factor a bit into the book but it's a really fitting title.

Yes, some flowers can be toxic to pets. In this case it was Lily's. They are highly toxic to cats but some varieties are to dogs as well and I wasn't sure what kind they were. At the very least they can cause really bad GI upset. He's doing great today though.

A Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue is one I've wanted to read for SUCH a long time. I need it!

  10. Oh no!! Poor Fonzi. :( That silly dog... remind me never to let a bouquet of flowers anywhere near my dog. Glad that things are okay now though, even if he's still getting over the whole ordeal! Seems like lots has been going on in your life, I really appreciate you visiting my blog and commenting though! :)

Both of those books, Bad Romance and Gentleman's, are on my wishlist. They're both hot titles at the moment, I keep seeing them EVERYWHERE!!! Glad that you also loved them! :) Hope your next week is better!

  12. OH! What a rough week. I hope everyone is feeling better now.

Have you ever watched the TV show FARSCAPE? It was on sci-fy network back in the early 2000s. They had a sentient ship. It's a great show (may even be on Netflix now).

  16. Aww, poor Fonzi. Ours munched ALL of our potted plants and he's totally fine. He's stomach easily gets upset but it's still a mystery to me that he was ok when he ate our plants lol. Good thing I don't receive any bouquet of flowers or he might eat it too. But I'm delighted to know that your little Fonzi is fine now :)

  19. Oh no on the pup. That's heartbreaking. And naughty on your pup for the flowers. We had to do that once with a bottle of the cat's pills that the puppy ate. He did not make that mistake twice. lol

    1. Yikes. he never eats anything he shouldn't!! Like - you could leave a plate of steak in front of him and he won't touch it so I have no idea what happened there lol

  20. So sorry to hear about your friends dog. It's always sad when a pet has to be put down, even when it's not yours. And sorry to hear your poor dog ate something he shouldn't and had an emergency trip to the vets but hopefully he'll learn from this mistake (maybe). I hope you're feeling better too.

You successfully have three books in this post I really want to read. I already had Bad Romance and Vice and Virtue on my TBR but Honor Among Thieves sounds brilliant, if only it was out sooner!

Nothing wrong with flying by the seat of your pants. I just reduce down the number of weekly blog posts when things go wrong as all my blog posts are sorted at the weekend for the following week. Or... mostly finished anyway.

  23. Poor pupper. Both your friends and Fonzi. So glad he's okay. There must have been a few nasties in the bouquet to make him so ill. Honor Among Theives sounds so good! I've enjoyed Ann Aguirre in the part but Rachael Caine not so much. Really looking forward to it's release. Hope you're starting to feel better Karen and that Fonzi is on the mend. Much love to you both <3

I absolutely loved The Gentleman's Guide...! So glad that you liked it as well. Monty and Percy...swoon. Apparently there's going to be a book about Felicity's adventures, too! I'm very intrigued by Bad Romance, everyone seems to be giving it rave reviews so far. And falling in love with a ship? Nice. Count me in for Honor Among Thieves! :D

I have to say that I'm curious about Bad Romance. Darn it, now I have that song in my head.
