My week of: Books, Movies, Music

Hey everyone! I’m still working out how I want to blog. I’m getting so bored with my standard review format (& I’m also getting so lazy about writing posts 3+ days per week lol) so I might do a few of these weekly posts instead, that cover a little bit of everything.

As always, thank you for hanging in there with me and wild swings regarding designs and blogging style.

Books!

25686927
Him by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy (NA, m/m) ~ Goodreads

My thoughts: I’m a big fan of both authors (particularly Kennedy for the humor in her books – my reading kryptonite) & Him did not disappoint. Friends to lovers story that was sweet, romantic, sexy and fun! Perfect book to pull me our of contemporary romance slump.

24251647This Much Space (Twelve Beats in a Bar #2) by K.K. Hendin (NA) ~ Goodreads

My thoughts
: The first 40% (on my Kindle) of this book was almost sheer perfection. The heroine, Olivia, is plus size, funny, smart, confidant, has a healthy sexual libido and great friends. This book avoids almost all of the typical clichés and I was thrilled.

Unfortunately, the second half of the book changes tone so abruptly that it was jarring, even though it handled the topic of self harm (of Olivia’s love interest, Thierry) very well. There were also numerous editing issues like poor sentence structure, incorrect words. The dialogue, during conversations, that was confusing enough that I had to go back to figure out which characters were speaking.

Most people weren’t bothered by this according to the Goodreads reviews, so give it a try if you’re looking for a NA that read more like chick-lit.

With better editing, I would love to read more books by this author. It was a refreshing voice in the genre. And I have to give kudos to whoever managed to get the accurate, plus size model on the gorgeous cover!

Movies!

Ant-Man ~ IMDb

My thoughts: I was so surprised by how much I loved this movie! It was fresh, fun, had great special effects, lots of action, that didn’t involve the generic blowing up of a big city, and a lot of heart. As with all Marvel movies – make sure you stay for after the credits for a bonus scene.

Music!

Jack Garratt – Weathered – love this song & the lyrics. The video has the perfect summer/coming of age vibe.

  1. Oh cool! I had doubts about Ant-Man, I don't really see Paul Rudd as a superhero...

I've been surfing Netflix. Can't find my Korean telenovella fix! Lol The last I saw was entitled Cunning Single Lady and I loved it because it was so funny! I'm still searching for something similar. Any suggestions?

    1. I felt the same way about Ant-Man - plus I wasn't sure how something the size of an ant wouldn't just be laughable - but they play into both PR *not* being super hero material and the ant thing and then make it work. I was impressed.

I'll have to ask my friend (who lives in Korea if she has any suggestions). I haven't watched any of those shows since last year.

  2. It's good that you have wild swings. At least one never knows what to expect when coming here! Except for a few cats and dogs in different shapes and forms ;).

    1. I'm not sure that's a good thing but I can't seem to get back that good ole' blog loving feeling lol

At least not in the way I used to do it. But that's fine - as long as I'm having fun :-)

    1. It was. I would love to see a second season but I can't find anything online.

  4. Oh I haven't heard of "Him". I might have to check that one out. I don't think that "This Much Space" would be for me. I'm an ending girl.

Oh and I so want to see Ant-man. I thought it would be so stupid, but I am thinking it is more humorous. Perfect! :)

    1. I was basically dragged to Ant-Man but I ended up loving it.

I was the only one to feel that way (one other reviewer agreed on GR's) about This Much Space so I hate to knock it but the second half was such a tonal shift - combined with the editing issues I was disappointed.

  6. Ha - I'm not really a superhero story fan, so Ant Man did not appeal to me, but maybe I will try it.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics

    1. I'm not either - this was a Kevin movie pick lol

It was a really sweet movie though and had a lot of funny moments. I think even non super hero fans will like it.

  8. As much as I'm generally "in" to superhero movies, I've been getting some superhero fatigue lately. Still, I do want to see this one...I might just wait until it comes out on DVD.

Also, hi Karen! **waves** Haven't talked to you in forever! Hope everything is well! :D

    1. I still check in with all of the old crowd now and then (Yes, I realize my phrasing makes me sound ancient), and it's good to get my book talk fix every once in awhile!

  9. I know what you mean, it is hard to keep up with blogging and still love it. You have to do what works for you. I think so far, this summer, the movies have been a bit lackluster, nothing out there is screaming to me. I did see the Minion movie and Inside Out with my kids. Wasn't a big fan of Minions, but loved Inside Out. I will have to check out Antman.

  10. I'm glad to hear that about Antman! This Much Space seems really good too. You'll have to tell me via e-mail what happens, lol.

  11. Him sounds amazing. I came across it on Goodreads recently and I tried to add it to my Amazon wish list, but it wouldn't show up on there. I need to check again. Glad you loved it.

I REALLY want to see Ant Man too. I'm glad you liked it more than you thought you would. I enjoy Marvel films a lot, and I love Paul Rudd, so I'm sure I'll love it.

  12. Ya know, the trailer and hype for Ant-Man all looked cheesy to me, but I've only heard good things about it. Will have to check it out, after I finally check out Jurrasic World. Love me some Chris Pratt!
