For What It's Worth

Words I hope to never hear again

This is a bit of a random post but do you ever hear a word that makes you cringe and wish it could be banished – never to to be said again?

These following words just need to go yet I keep hearing them. OVER & OVER …

TWERK / TWERKING

First of all – what a weird word in general.

TWERK breaking point. When I saw a picture of a woman twerking on her dogs head. NO. Just NO. Make it stop.

SELFIE

It just sounds like something a toddler would say. “Hey mom! I just made a selfie!”

SELFIE breaking point. When Geraldo Rivera is publicizing his nearly naked 70 year old body on Twitter it has gone too far.

SIDE BOOB

I think The Huffington Post would dissolve into nothingness if there were no longer side boob pictures to post.

Wear a bra people. And a shirt that fits you properly. It’s really not that hard to do.

SIDE BOOB breaking point. From the first time I ever heard/saw it. What are we 12?? Ooh I see part of your boob!!

Sluice/Sluicing/Sluiced

I HATE this word. Whenever I read it I get skeeved out. There’s really no good reason for it. It’s a perfectly fine word but ewwww.

What words/phrases annoy you?

  1. Boy, am I with you on the first two! To be honest, I'd never heard of "twerking" until the Miley incident, and now I see it everywhere. And, I think I was really sick of the "selfie" itself before I even knew it had a name. Nothing shows how self-centered a teenage girl can be than seeing a new picture she took of herself every couple hours on FB. (I am thinking of the daughter of a friend of mine.)

    1. I rarely - if ever - go on FB and that's one of the reasons lol

I'm not opposed to fun pictures but I don't really need to see down your shirt all day!

  2. Haha, great post. I agree with all of these...and I'm very glad that I haven't seen the twerking and selfie breaking point pics that you mentioned! Very glad!

  3. Yeah, I seriously dislike all those words. Unfortunately, as a high school teacher, I hear the first two more than I ever cared to. I think it's a regional thing but "ratchet" (meaning trashy -- it's taken the place of "ghetto") needs to go away.

    1. I have never heard ratchet used that way. How weird. I guess every generation has their lingo....says the old person lol

  5. LOL - and BTW, I did like that you inserted your "breaking point" examples.
Let's hope that the M.C., erm, incident is forgotten soon, along with the word in question - though no word could ever equal my personal distaste for women still treating their own bodies as sexual commodities.

Words that I don't like? The first one that comes to my mind right now is "trendy"...maybe it's because we seem to use it an awful lot here in Italy (yes, we have a tendency to replace Italian words with English ones...which is "trendy" as well, I suppose), or maybe because I hate what it stands for...

    1. Yeah I read an article written after the new Rhianna video (she's basically wearing nothing, showering strippers with money) that women are becoming both he pimp and the prostitute.

There's definitely a line of being empowered with your sexuality and just feeding the machine and "thinking" you're in charge.

I dont' hear the word trend very often. I'm sure I could come up with quite a few book related ones that come into play during the BIG book releases. I feel like I'm being clobbered over the head. lol

  6. This was a great post. I agree there are certain words that I either just don't like the sound of or ones that are overused and hyped up.

    1. I think that's the real issue. When a word catches on you hear it ALL THE TIME. lol

  7. What the hell sleucing? I don't know if I've ever heard that thank goodness. And twerking...just uhh no. I haven't heard side boob before but jeez haha yeah maybe its that I don't follow Huffington Post? LOL

    1. sluicing - wash or rinse freely with a stream or shower of water.
"she sluiced her face in cold water"

It's weird to me that there is enough side boob to warrant a term for it lol

  8. I'm getting rather tired of the words "yolo" and "ratchet". Those are pretty common on my campus. Also, hashtag. Out loud. When there is no tagging.

    1. Another person who mentioned ratchet. So weird. I've never heard that one. What is yolo?

I read a book where the characters said LOL, hashtag and all that out loud. How weird is that??

  9. I agree with the first 2. Haven't heard the other 2 enough to bother me.

What bothers me is any Justin Beiber song. Sorry young gals, but all his songs turn into earworms for me. ARGH! LOL

    1. I'm so ashamed to admit that when I hear one of his songs I can't stop singing it for days. lol

  10. It's not the pictures that bother me (well unless they're half naked in front of a mirror lol) but the word selfie. Some of these words make me feel like a 2 year old if I say them.

  11. Geraldo looks good but that was so wrong. No half naked selfies if you're over a certain age folks.

    1. Yeah - he's looking good but doesn't mean I need to see all the goods for myself lol

  12. Selfie definitely! I've always hated that. It sounds gross. And that woman should be fined for Twerking on her dog's head.

  13. Hahaha @ side boob. I like seeing cleavages better than side boobs and if your boobs aren't up to here, then skip it. Do you have an aversion for MOIST too? LOL Love this post!

    1. OMG MOIST! I hadn't really thought of it before but ewwww lol
