Sunday Ramblings…Movie review and the weekly wrap up!

Unknown

We went to see World War Z the other day and I really enjoyed it.

If you’ve read the book you need to just forget about it. The movie is loosely based on it at best. While the book focuses more on the political/global aspects of a zombie apocalypse with the Brad Pitt character just facilitating the stories from each country – the movie is all about Brad Pitt finding the cure and saving his family.

If you can let that go and enjoy the movie for what it is, rather than what it isn’t, it’s quite good. The first hour is incredibly creepy and intense. There isn’t a lot of actual gore but that works very well with this movie. The implied threat was way scarier than seeing it.

I thought the second half and especially the abrupt ending floundered a bit. There were a few things that I found completely implausible  (I know it’s a zombie movie – but some things were even too implausible for that) Even so the acting was great, and I didn’t even realize 2 hours had passed by.
Most of the movies I’ve seen this summer, including a few of the popular blockbusters, have kept me checking my watch and saying …is it over yet? Please end already!

I still wish they had made a mini series out of the book instead but the movie was a lot of fun.

  1. Please do not say they find a cure, the cure is to kill zombies!

  3. I still haven't seen WWZ. I do plan on doing so very shorty though. I wasn't an overly huge fan of the book (shocking I know) so I'm really curious to see the movie.

    1. Let me know what you think. If you didn't like the book then you won't be as upset lol

I went in with no expectations so I was ok with it veering so much. I just wasn't fan of the end which seemed to try at the last minute to appease book fans and it didn't work IMO

  4. I haven't read the book which it sounds like would be a good thing in this case! And I'm glad to know that the movie isn't too gory...I'm a wimp and get nightmares easily!! lol

  6. I haven't read World War Z but it's Tabs favorite book of all time (or at least one of them) so I definitely plan on reading it at some point! It sounds great. I figured from the premise of the book that the movie wouldn't be following it very closely - which sometimes it's nice to see a different spin on a similar idea, other times it's nice to see the book made real before our eyes! I think even the best book to movie adaptations disappoint some readers though - we all imagine things differently, it's part of the beauty of reading, we create the pictures ourselves!

I usually go into a movie thinking it will not be like the book and then am pleasantly surprised when it's closer to the book than I figured it would be! :D

    1. In this case, I don't think there was any way the movie could follow the book. It's too complex and global in nature. But it was a lot of fun for a zombie movie and it managed to keep the essence of the book.

If I really really love a book then I don't go see the movie. I feel like I can't unsee it lol If it changes how I saw the character while I was reading then I can't go back to my original image. Most of the time I don't care either way because I don't expect them to follow exactly.

I think HP was a good example of successfully following the books closely.

  8. I really enjoyed this movie. I am not a big zombie fan but when I saw the trailer for this one I was really interested. I thought it was very good except for the abrupt ending like you said (I would have liked to seen the family after they went to the refugee camp). And there were a couple things that I just had to suspend disbelief for but other than those moments I thought it was a good movie and I might get the dvd. I read that the third act of the script was originally different than the final result, I wonder why they changed it and if the original ending would have been different than what we got.

    1. My ability to suspend disbelief was lost after the plane lol

I heard that the original script and shoot was closer tot he book but didn't' really work. I can believe that because the book is more political and that might be boring on film. I'm curious to know because the end seemed rushed instead.

    2. That plane crash yeah I definitely rolled my eyes with that one. The section in front of the MC crushed and the section behind the MC was missing but his section is basically ok :P.
