Let’s Talk: Blogging and time management

Let’s Talk is a fun new meme to discuss an little bit of this & a little bit of that (not always bookish) hosted by Smash Attack Reads and A Book Obsession.

How much time do you think you spend on blogging each week, including commenting on other blogs, participating in events, Twitter/Facebook blog talk, etc? Do you have a time management system that works well for you? We’d love to know!

When I first started blogging, I spent several hours a day reading and commenting on blogs. These days I would say an hour a day. I was starting to burn out so I take a few days off from the computer now and it helps keep this whole blogging thing fresh.

Now Twitter is a whole different story! I‘m on Twitter the entire day, checking as often as possible. I just love the immediacy of it and how you can end up discussing all kinds of topics all at once. (As I’m writing this post – I’m in the middle of convo’s about sex & violence in YA, music, naming my favorite heroines, playdates for my dogs lol)

I have a Facebook page but I rarely if ever go there. Looking at my wall gives me a headache lol
I have zero time management skills. I’m a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl so I just blog when I have the time and I don’t worry about it anymore. Some days it could be 4-5 hours writing posts, commenting etc – other days 1/2 hour.

My phone is my “system” I guess. It allows me to keep up on email/post links/Twitter all day so I’m not swamped when I get home. I hate commenting on blogs using my phone though so it’s mostly just visiting.

  1. I schedule blog tours/bloghops on my phone. Other than that I just do what I feel like. I blogged five days a week for a while, and it sucked. My blog started to suck. I got tired of it, and we both suffered.

    1. I agree. Once you start "trying" to blog it changes your blog. I just go with what I feel like doing now and I've been so much happier.

  2. I spend a lot of time ;) But I try to be quick. I post a blog when I get home from work, and later in the evening I check blogs while watching tv and I also try to comment a bit before work

    1. I really should comment more from my iPad. I could do it while I'm watching TV.

  3. I'm in the middle of a mid-life blog crisis? I've stopped being on Twitter because it was sucking so much time and I'm going to cut back the hours I spend on the blog every day because it's just too much. So...working on balance here. Two weeks ago it was a full-time job with reading/writing worked in. Facebook is auto-updates and nothing else. *shudder* I hate Facebook. lol

    1. Oh no!! That was me a few months ago. I was ready to quit. I just stepped away for several weeks and then slowly dipped my toe back in.

      I don't worry about blogging 5 -7 days a week anymore. Or even reading. If I don't feel like reading I don't.

    1. I wonder how much of my life was wasted on Twitter lol

I can't seem to step away though.

  5. Twitter is a huge time suck. I do try to spend a lot of time commenting and visiting blogs. I think eventually I will have to back off a bit on that. I have noticed it really retracts from my reading time and how many books I can read a month.

    1. It's so weird. Once you start reviewing books and blogging - you don't have time to read anymore! Totally defeats the purpose lol

  6. Interesting post, its scary how much time we actually spend on these various sites. I'm trying to resist the lure of Twitter as between blogging and FB I spend enough time online.

  7. Lol, your system sounds a lot like mine. I try to keep up with Twitter and email at work or between work (I'm a piano teacher). Then I give myself a two-hr window to do blogs, comments, etc... on days I can handle it. Sometimes I also take a few days off. I just don't think we're meant for this much computering. (I make up words sometimes) But I still love it!

  8. I'm a fly by the seat of my pants gal too, I just blog when I blog. I've tried to use a schedule of sorts but it didn't take ;)

Found you on FB and Twitter and I'm stalking you both places now!

  9. I don't do twitter much anymore - used to. I wonder how many people actually look at if twitter is beneficial or not for blogging - or maybe it's the interactions - not sure. I do try to comment a lot though - so between blogging, commenting & reading - and having a life outside of this - twitter & facebook are sort of at the wayside.

  11. I'm a phone girl too. I've learned not to worry about IT in general. It's FUN when it is FUN, when it is work it isn't.
