Blogger ramblings… taking a little break

I’m taking a bit of a blogging break for the month of August.

You probably won’t even notice because I’ll still be visiting blogs and have reviews up but most of them will be something called Short & Tweet Reviews – inspired by Kate at Midnight Book Girl. I tried to stay within the confines of the 140 character tweet but they’re more like twitlonger /mini reviews. But Short & Tweet sounds better and I made a button and everything soooo… hehe

It seemed like an easier way to talk about what I was reading without being stuck at the computer. I can take a break from the annoying, stressful parts of blogging, yet still be around.

I hope you are all having a safe and happy summer!

Here are a few of the books I’m hoping to get to during my break. My husband is on vacation so I might not even end up reading so we’ll see. No pressure FTW!!!

1.) Mr. Crankypants – aka: Ben Hausman. Why would I recommend a book that has a major Mr. Crankypants who is rude, bitter, guarded and oh did I mention RUDE?? I rarely like this type of love interest. But he’s also complex, struggling to be better and tries to get it right when it comes to May.

2.) Mr. Crankypants/Ben is a chef! A chef who can whip up French Toast with fresh whipped cream at a moments notice for breakfast. He also knows all the best restaurants to bring May to expand her culinary horizons. If that isn’t reason alone to read this book (or marry Ben) then I have another… (yeah I know I said he was rude but…food! I can be bought with food!)

3.) Mr. Crankypants is also a beekeeper. Sound boring? It’s not. I found it absolutely fascinating and who knew that beekeeping on a rooftop could be so sexy??

4.) May. What a great heroine! She’s definitely been sold a line of bullshit from her family regarding her looks. Her mom repeatedly lets her know that she’s plain and not as pretty as her sister so she should settle for whoever wants her. People keep pushing aside her artistic talent and telling her she needs to settle – with her career, with love, with life.

May is always looking for the big, perfect movie moments that will sweep you away. It isn’t until she meets Ben, that she sees life is made up of messy, unpredictable love that both tests you and makes you stronger. She just needs to be brave enough to take the leap.

5.) The romance was real. Although the story takes place over a short time, Knox allows a solid foundation based on friendship, to form first. Both May and Ben fall back on unhealthy habits to protect themselves from pain so the relationship doesn’t come easy but it’s all the more real and satisfying in the end.

And it’s about healing yourself first. Another person can’t fix you but they can support and help make you be the best version of yourself.

Truly is a real gem that had me cringing, laughing, swooning and tearing up at times. Not to mention the descriptions of NYC and the food. You all KNOW how much I love my NYC food! I was seriously considering hopping on a plane for a quick visit after I put this book down.

I love books that make me look at life differently. This is that kind of book. A story that makes you appreciate life, maybe make you push outside your comfort zone a little. Learn to accept yourself and know that you’re good enough just how you are. Stop waiting for things to be perfect and take that leap into the unknown and see how beautiful the imperfect the “disgusting and amazing” world can be.

This was my first book by Ruthie Knox but it definitely won't be my last. She has such gorgeous writing with intelligent, realistic characters.

Blogger ramblings…Up next!

I'm mostly caught up on all my review books - just a few more to go!

I MUST stay away from the freebie/.99 diversion reads and putting my plans out there always makes me stay on track so I'm posting what I need to read and review this week.

Have you read any of these books yet?

I'm really looking forward to Lock In by John Scalzi. I haven't read anything by him before but I love him on Twitter. So smart and funny.

The Graveyard Book is a graphic novel adaptation (by P. Craig Russell) of the Neil Gaiman bestseller & it will be my first graphic novel.

Let's Get Lost by Adi Alsaid sounds like a fun road trip book. Perfect for summer!

And I'm curious how I'll fell about Visions by Kelley Armstrong. I liked but didn't love the first book, Omens, but I've heard this one is better.

Do you have any reading goals for the next week?

Review: Her Secret, His Surprise by Paula Altenburg

22571366***This is a Red-Hot Bliss Title! As such, it contains sexual content***

Conflict of interest is an understatement…

Since being disowned by her strict father, Cass Stone has spent her adulthood trying to prove him wrong. Her drive has led to more success than her family ever thought she’d achieve, and life is looking great. Not even an incredible and mysterious one night stand that leaves her a single mom can trip her up...until the father of her baby stumbles back into her life, as sexy and unreliable as ever.

Logan Alexander hasn’t forgotten the night he spent with Cass two years ago, but he never expects to end up undercover as her assistant. His job saves lives—like it should have saved his brother—and he can’t afford complications. It’s difficult enough to maintain his cover as a carefree wanderer when he realizes his attraction to Cass hasn’t faded...and then he meets Cass’s daughter.

Review:
Her Secret, His Surprise was a really sweet story with two very likable characters - even though they are both keeping BIG secrets.

I loved how Logan and Cass take the high ground with each other, even though they have plenty to be angry about. Instead of lashing out, they try to see each others point of view. It made their rocky relationship very believable and easy to root for. Olivia, Cass and Logan’s little girl, was all kinds of adorable, as was Logan's reaction to her.

The mystery/undercover aspect fell a little flat for me. I was like…that's it? - so I kind of wish this just stuck with the secret baby plot but overall it was a cute read.

You can't go wrong with an Entangled Bliss title if you're looking for a quick, sweet romance for summer beach reading. Because it’s a Red Hot Bliss title, there’s a little extra heat in the sexy department!

Cheesetastic movie: Bigfoot

I LOVE a really good (meaning AWFUL) cheesy movies and Bigfoot (2012) (Amazon) one was one of the best (worst). As a child of the 70’s – it doesn’t get much better than this.

It stars Danny Bonaduce (the Partridge Family) and Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) as A DJ and a conservationist. They team up to fight against Bigfoot with an array of D-list celebs. The dialogue…..omgosh - just watch it!

The cast…the dialogue…the GIANT Bigfoot – awesome!

Trailer – believe me – it doesn’t do this movie justice.

Ok – soooo I’ve loved this song for awhile now but it’s really strange and I wasn’t sure anyone else would like it. I’ve heard it on the radio this past week so you’re probably going to hear it anyway. Why not from me first!

Here is the link to the Gooey official video if you want to see – it’s WEIRD & kinda gross! but I like it. lol All their videos are kind of freaky.

Spotlight: Accidentally Married on Purpose by Rachel Harris & Ready to Wed by Cindi Madsen

I saw this tweet in my stream the other day:

“So much is underestimated in the difficulty of writing "fluff." I can't think of anything else in writing that's so deceptive in its ease.” (by @MissDahlELama)

I guess if something makes you happy and isn’t overly angsty we equate that with easy to write??
But it’s really difficult to take a trope (best friends little sister, friends to lovers, secret baby etc), make it your own, and keep readers invested even though they know exactly how it will turn out.

There has to be tension and lust but it’s usually fade to black sex. The writer has to find a way to make you really believe in this couple even though you’re not privy to their most intimate moments. The end has to be wrapped up in a nice little bow despite often wacky circumstances that might otherwise leave a reader rolling their eyes.

It’s such a difficult balance and my somewhat rambling intro leads me to two authors that I think nail it every time. They also both just happen to have new book releases!

Accidentally Married on Purpose by Rachel Harris takes on the drunk marriage (that they can’t remember) in Vegas trope and it’s a funny, sexy, heartfelt package of summer swoon.

Ready to Wed by Cindi Madsen has Dakota, a wedding planner, jilted at the alter, only to reconnect with her childhood best friend, Brendan West. This book made all kinds of happy with the humor, friendship and love connecting the characters.

I highly recommend both of these books – and really, anything written by them if you’re looking for the much underappreciated “fluff”. I don’t really see what’s so wrong about reading books that make you happy. Harumph!

Waiting on Wednesday: Once Upon a Rose by Laura Florand

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine to spotlight upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

17832871

Once Upon a Rose (La Vie en Roses #2)
By Laura Florand

She stole his roses.

Fleeing the spotlight, burnt-out indie rock star Zeina—“Belle”—Dubois seeks refuge in the south of France. That old, half-forgotten stone house and rose-covered acres her father left her in a valley of roses seems like a good place to soothe a wounded heart. She certainly doesn’t expect the most dangerous threat to her heart to pounce on her as soon as she sets foot on the land.

He wants them back.

Matt didn’t mean to growl at her quite that loud. But—his roses! She can’t have his roses. Even if she does have all those curls and green eyes and, and, and…what was he growling about again?

Or maybe he just wants her.

When an enemy invades his valley and threatens his home, heart, and livelihood, Matthieu Rosier really knows only one way to defend himself.

It might involve kissing.

And that might be just the start.

***

I adore Florand’s Chocolate series, While I’ll miss reading about her temperamental chefs (although I hear there will be more in the future!), I’m positive that her new La Vie En Rose series will give me many new characters to love. Her descriptions of food and scenery are so gorgeous that I can’t wait to visit France and the beautiful fields of roses, lavender and jasmine.

I love covers, especially when they add something new to the original song. Here are a few I’ve stumbled across.

Bastille – No Scrubs (TLC)

This is one of my favorites.

Ed Sheeran and Passenger – No Diggity (Thrift Shop)

How AWESOME is this cover??!!

Mumford and Sons – Tesselate (Alt-J)

This song is perfect for Mumford and Sons. Almost as good as the original.

Ed Sheeran – Drunk In Love (Beyonce)

This is all kinds of funny and awesome and perfection!

Review: Right Click (Click, #3) by Lisa Becker

22033176Love. Marriage. Infidelity. Crises of identity. Death. Cupcakes. The themes in Right Click, the third and final installment in the Click series, couldn't be more pressing for this group of friends as they navigate through their 30's. Another six months have passed since we last eavesdropped on the hilarious, poignant and oftentimes inappropriate email adventures of Renee and friends. As the story continues to unfold, relationships are tested and some need to be set "right" before everyone can find their "happily ever after."

Review:
Although I’m not a fan of stories told in epistolary format, I have enjoyed this series, told exclusively in emails between a group of friends. It works because Becker manages to convey love, frustration and humor in a way that feels like you’re on the receiving end of that email. Instead of feeling distanced with the format – I feel like "OMG – she did whaaaat?” and I want to write back and add my two cents. lol

Right Click is the 3rd and final book in the Click series and we’ve followed the group as they have expanded with marriages, lovers and babies. In Click” An Online Love Story, we met the gang – Renee and her pals “anal-compulsive Mark, the overly-judgmental Ashley and the over-sexed Shelley.” (Credit: Goodreads) as they navigated online dating.

This final installment felt like the most honest one yet. As the friends have settled into relationships new complications emerge. Renee feels left out as Shelley moves out of state and seems to be moving on without her and Mark ‘s relationship drama puts her in unenviable situation that jeopardizes their friendship while Ashley is being overwhelmed with her new baby.

Friendships, as in any long term relationship, take work and nurturing. Sometimes you are in a different place with your life from your BFF and it’s difficult to maintain that connection but that’s what made this book so great. Harsh words were said – but they were needed - and sometimes we just need a swift kick in the pants. Something only a true friend can do for you.

This can’t be read as a stand alone (IMO) but the whole series is an extremely fast read due to the email format.

This was a very satisfying conclusion to a very unique series about friendships and finding love in the age of the internet.

Review: Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater

18406862A standalone companion book to the internationally bestselling Shiver Trilogy.

Sinner follows Cole St. Clair, a pivotal character from the #1 New York Times bestselling Shiver Trilogy. Everybody thinks they know Cole's story. Stardom. Addiction. Downfall. Disappearance. But only a few people know Cole's darkest secret -- his ability to shift into a wolf. One of these people is Isabel. At one point, they may have even loved each other. But that feels like a lifetime ago. Now Cole is back. Back in the spotlight. Back in the danger zone. Back in Isabel's life. Can this sinner be saved?

Goodreads | Author | Purchase

Review:I’ve been wanting to read something by Maggie Stiefvater for a long time. I almost started the The Wolves of Mercy Falls (Shiver trilogy) series  so many times but then everyone keeps giving me conflicting thoughts. The consensus is to read Shiver (book #1) and stop. But I’m not good at stopping – I need to know what happens so I’ve just avoided it all together.

Then I saw Sinner at BEA – a stand alone companion novel based on the Shiver trilogy. I’ve also heard a lot of great things about Cole and Isabel so I took a chance and grabbed a copy.

So now I get it. All the waxing poetic about Maggie’s writing. To be honest, she had me at the letter she wrote to readers before the story ever started.

“As I wrote the hot-cold relationship of two people who took turns being the sinner and the sin, I puzzled out how a place like L.A. could both destroy a person and build them into something impossible and new.”

The writing is so…so…I don’t know – the words reach in and grab you and force your full attention to their meaning. I would be reading a sentence and just stop, like it slapped me in the face. I could feel the words. Not a great description, I know, but that’s the only way I can describe how I felt reading this.

“Here was the thing: I was in love with Cole.
Or had been. Or was going to be. I couldn’t tell the difference.” pg. 21

Cole and Isabel were such fascinating characters. They’re really f*cked up. Aggressive yet scared – they love with everything they have yet consistently throw up walls. L.A. was the perfect backdrop to their story. The choice to veer into the darkness or into the light that the city offers is a constant struggle, especially for Cole.

Now this book is advertised as a stand alone and it is. Sinners is self contained with a solid conclusion – yet – I really felt like I missed a substantial part of Cole and Isabel’s past. I got a vague sense of what happened but not much in the way of a recap. Also, Isabel was much less developed here than Cole. It’s a testament to Stiefvater’s writing that I loved this book as much as I did with virtually no background. It also makes me think I should reassess my stance on not reading the Shiver Trilogy.

{Speed Date} Review: Boomerang (Boomerang #1) by Noelle August

18869613The first book in a sensational New Adult trilogy from Noelle August>

Welcome to Boomerang.com, the dating site for the millennial gen with its no-fuss, no-commitments matchups, and where work is steamier than any random hook-up.

Mia Galliano is an aspiring filmmaker. Ethan Vance has just played his last game as a collegiate soccer star. They’re sharp, hungry for success, and they share a secret.

Last night, Ethan and Mia met at a bar, and, well . . . one thing led to another, which led to them waking up the next morning—together. Things turned awkward in a hurry when they found themselves sharing a post hookup taxi . . . to the same place: Boomerang headquarters.

What began as a powerful connection between them is treated to a cold shower courtesy of two major complications. First, Boomerang has a strict policy against co-worker dating. And second, they’re now competitors for only one job at the end of summer.

As their internships come to an end, will they manage to keep their eyes on the future and their hands off each other, or will the pull of attraction put them right back where they started?

Speed Date Review:

How we met: Ok - I admit it. I was shallow and only dated you for your looks. I mean come on! That book cover screams fun summer read!

First date: You are so much more than just your good looks! I know everyone says that… “I love you for more than your unbroken spine and crisp pages baby” but it's true. YOU ARE A STORY WITH SUBSTANCE. A FUN story with substance!!!

We're going steady now: Ok - so there's a lot of wackiness going on with how Mia and Ethan met and they're competitive work situation. After an anonymous, drunken one night stand they find themselves working as interns for the same dating company - competing for only one paid position at the end of the summer.

There's a no dating policy at work and now they also have to date other people to learn how Boomerang - a dating site promising no-commitment hookups -  works while still longing for each other.

Despite the kind of far fetched circumstances it's Mia and Ethan that make this book work so well. They are truly kind, open, thoughtful people.

Ethan loves kids and coaches a children's soccer league (sa-woon), while Mia is an aspiring filmmaker trying to document her grandmothers life as Alzheimer's takes her memories away. I LOVED both of them and their smoking hot chemistry!

I'm going to hug you, and squeeze you and keep you on my bookshelf forever: There are so few New Adult titles out there that are fun to read but Boomerang is one of them. I laughed almost non stop watching Mia and Ethan try to navigate their relationship on the down low and their hilarious attempts at on-line, hook-up dating. I thought I would hate that part (them dating other people) but it was so funny and sometimes very poignant.

There is also an emphasis on friends, family and going after your dreams. I loved how a potential romance didn't derail all thoughts of Mia and Ethan's future. Sex doesn’t solve all. They were refreshingly mature characters - even though they made a few mistakes along the way.

The afterglow: One more thing - this is New Adult - but it is NOT the non stop sex NA that we've been reading. I'm loving the new sexier rather than explicit books that have started entering this genre. All Lined Up by Cora Carmack & I Want It That Way by Ann Aguirre are two other NA’s that I highly recommend.

I think we might finally be pulling out of that “NA is just YA with porn” label phase.

This is the most fun I've had reading a book in a very long time. Great characters. Great story. I HIGHLY recommend Boomerang.

All Four Stars Excerpt

"Gladdy?"

Gladys jumped. Her stomach began to churn queasily, like it did after eating the greasy takeout her parents brought home most nights from Sticky Burger or Fred's Fried Fowl.

"Yes?" she said as bravely as she could.

Her father knelt down beside the sofa. "Let's start at the beginning," he said. "Can you explain what, exactly, you were doing in the kitchen?"

Gladys told the truth. "I was making crème brûlée."

"Crumb broo-lay?" Gladys's dad looked up at his wife quizzically, but she just shrugged. "What is crumb broo-lay?"

Gladys sighed. If a dish wasn't on the menu at one of the fast-food joints in town, her parents didn't know it existed. "It's a dessert," she explained. "A custard with a crust of burnt sugar on top. Brûlée means burnt in French."

"So now we have curtains brûlée, huh?" Gladys's dad laughed at his little joke. But her mom didn't seem to think it was funny as she stepped forward to take over the interrogation. She had white extinguisher powder on her face, and her red lipstick was smeared. The combination made her look like a clown--a scary clown.

"Gladys," Clown-Mom said, moving her hands to her hips, "who taught you how to make this crumb...thing?"

Gladys took a deep breath. "I taught myself," she said. "I've seen chefs do it on TV, and I found the recipe in one of my cookbooks, so--"

"So you thought you'd just drag your father's blowtorch out of the garage and take a crack at it?"
"No!" Gladys cried. "I mean, I didn't just...decide to do it and go get the blowtorch. I planned it really carefully. Normally I'm a very good cook."

"Normally?" Her mom raised one powder-dusted eyebrow.

Uh-oh.

Gladys's dad jumped back in. "Gladdy," he said quickly, is this the first time you've been cooking on your own?"
