Tell Me Something Tuesday is hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings and discusses a wide range of topics from books to blogging.
Question: How do you find time to read?
Boring answer: I just do. I’m lucky in that I’m a very fast reader. I can read a 300 page book in about 4-5 hours or crank out several novellas in an afternoon.
As for my generic reading habits…I can’t read in the morning. I have things to do or work. Even if I had a spare moment of time my brain is too busy processing the things I need to get done for the day.
If I have the day off and to myself, I’ll start reading around 2-ish and keep going until dinner
I used to read in bed a lot when my husband worked nights but I don’t as much anymore. If I’m really into an e-book though, I’ll pull an all nighter because the light from the Kindle doesn’t bother him but then he tries to wake me up early and I’m all...

I also can't read in public...I get too distracted by all the noise and I can't do audio books for the same reason. Even though I can read with the tv on at home.
Tell Me: How do you make time to read?
I keep meaning to try audios again; I just don't know if I could concentrate on it enough to really grasp the story. I do love my Kindle at night because of the light. I can read almost anywhere, even in public, so that certainly helps if I'm waiting around somewhere. I mostly read at night though!

I can't do them. I get too distracted, an't multi task listening so it's just faster for me to read.
DeleteI don't know when was the last time I pulled an all-nighter with books. Maybe it was To All the Boys I Loved Before back in 2014. I fall asleep in bed far too easily nowadays. I have a system now that I read my kindle in bed and physical copies throughout the day.
ReplyDeleteI haven't pulled an all nighter in a ling time either :-(
DeleteIt took me a few tries before I got to like audiobooks, maybe it's just finding a narrator that works for you :) I typically read after work until bed if I have time.
ReplyDeleteI an only listen to podcasts or things where drifting off is ok lol
DeleteHa ha that's funny. I love to stay up late reading... until it's time to get up. then I curse myself for never learning... :)
ReplyDeleteThose morning book hangovers are killer lol
DeleteI AM that kitten too LOL.
ReplyDeleteI used to read whole books at night when I was younger...but I would no longer be able to do that now. I can never seem to get enough sleep, no matter if I manage to wake up at ten on a free day.
Of course your furries wouldn't let you go without eating...I mean, them 😂.
I just do, too. lol I figure if it's something that's important to you you find the time somehow even if it means not picking some other project or activity. And I'm okay with that. lol
ReplyDeleteI enjoy it and it just comes natural to me. There was a patch there when I was overwhelmed with review books and it felt like work - reading books I didn't love - but overall I just do it.
DeleteI'm the opposite of you. I can read in public but I get so into the story that I completely loose sight of what is happening around me. I stopped reading in the waiting room of the doctor's office because I kept missing when they would call me in. Lol.
ReplyDeleteOh I wish I could do that! I can't block anything out and I get distracted and keep having to re-read.
DeleteI'm jealous that you can read that fast!! I wish I could read faster and get through my books quicker. I don't have time to read in the mornings - during the week I only get to read after 8pm until about 10pm. Weekends I get a few extra hours in the afternoon if I'm lucky. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't concentrate on audio books, either!
I only work part-time and my husband works long hours so really my only obstacle is the pets and they do their damnedest to block my reading time lol
DeleteMost of the time I can't read in the mornings, either, I have to get to work except for Fridays. I love it when I can lounge in bed with my coffee and read, but most of the time I read after dinner or on the weekends. I get a lot of reading done with audio books because it takes an hour or more to drive to work, so at least two hours a day, and I listen to them while I run. :)
ReplyDeleteI like longer blocks of reading time and in the morning it would only be 15 minutes here or there and I get get absorbed in the book that way.
DeleteI don't have a long drive times either so I just do shorter podcasts. An audio book would take me forever to read at that rate lol
I am glad I am still fast cos that is the only way I manage one print a week with the little time I got
ReplyDeletePower readers ftw! lol
DeleteSame here Karen, but usually it depends if I am really loving the book hehe.
ReplyDeleteAs for the time, I rarely read in the morning or even in the afternoon. I work full-time so I only have the time to read in the evening (which also explains my always present eyebags haha), but it's actually convenient for me as I'm a night person and I tend to get really active at night ;)
I can read a book I'm enjoying in 4-6 hours. If I'm not loving it - it can take up to 3 days which feels like FOREVER to me lol
DeleteI'm not a night person but I will pull an all nighter if the book is good. i need to to know what happens or it stresses me all night lol
I'm the same way. I can read a 200 page book in 2 hours.
ReplyDeleteMe too - easily. Thankfully! lol
DeleteMornings are for my time to blog, respond to emails and drink lots of coffee. I don't actually start reading until probably after lunchtime. And I also can't read in public. I always bring a book with me, but I'm distracted so easily by everyone moving and talking around me. I end up sitting there trying to read the same paragraph the whole time.
ReplyDeleteThat is me! I'm not eavesdropping or anything but every little noise distracts me and I have to keep starting over lol
DeleteYour description of how you are able to read matches up pretty well with my own habits except I have no trouble reading in public. Its scary how I can tune it all out which is why I don't do it unless it desn't matter if I get lost in the book.
ReplyDeleteMy cat is the one to paw at me if I neglect my home responsibilities when I do the 'one more chapter' thing. :)
Oh how I wish I could do that! Every little noise makes me have to start over lol
DeleteBut at home I can ignore everything. Only my pets can interrupt my reading because they will. not. let. it. go. lol
I used to be like that, but things get in the way right now. :P I do think I'm like that kitty in the morning no matter what I've done the night before... even if it is sleep! LOL I can read in public sometimes but not often. I get distracted as well and I can't do audiobooks in public for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteI can't do audio books at all. I just can't focus on a plot line and not for more than 15-20 minutes.
DeleteGood question. I'm still trying to figure that out. In January, I basically ignored everything else. This month, I haven't been able to and I've finished one measly book. I hope I'll get done with another one. Oh well. Work is also super stressful right now so it's taking a toll on me. Oftentimes I just want to come home and sleep.
ReplyDeleteLife has a way of interfering with reading, that's for sure!
DeleteI can read in public but can't block out the TV at home at times. It really depends on what my husband is watching as to whether I block it out or not. I do read fairly fast but am lucky that I can listen to audiobooks at work which accounts for a lot of my reading totals. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI'm the exact opposite. I can block out the tv and I even leave it on in the background on purpose sometimes.
DeleteI wish I could do audiobooks but I guess it's not too big of a deal because I am lucky enough to have time to read.
Yeah, can't do the audio books as I get too distracted but can read anywhere and with TV, music or any other noise surrounding me. I block it out completely. :)
ReplyDeleteI mostly curl up on the sofa to read in the evenings when the kiddo goes to bed but I also read in bed with my kindle back lit so the other half can sleep... Lately, I've started snatching some reading time at the kitchen table while dinner is cooking just to try and claw back some more time to read!
Ic an block out almost anything at home -except demanding pets lol - but not anywhere else. I read on the sofa too but I can't read sitting up in a chair lol
DeleteMy reading rate is decent (60 pages/hr). I can knock out an average contemporary in one day, because I read a lot in the morning. I am the opposite of you. I use my daily commute to get in 3-3.5 hours of reading, and shut all the irksome commuters out.
ReplyDeleteI have a really short commute and I hate reading in short bursts so I wait until I'm home but if no one is bothering me I can read a book a day easily too.
DeleteI have a designated reading time in the evenings. My son is supposed to leave me alone during that time lol which only works out half the time. But it's better than nothing. I need reading time to keep my sanity. I used to read when I went to bed but that would usually involve me reading for hours and not getting any sleep. So I read before I get in bed now.
ReplyDeleteI get ansty if I don't read for too many days. I need it too. It calms me.
DeleteSame Karen! I'll often have two books on the go, a paperback for the lounge but prefer eBooks when going to bed so they light doesn't disturb the hubby who gets up super, super early for work. I prefer to read at night and can fly though an eBook in a couple of hours but for some reason, a paperback can take almost twice as long. Next weekend I'm planning on doing nothing but reading so should be able to knock out a few more. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteMy reading time is during my lunch break for work and before bed, mostly. I actually had to get an eye mask thingy for my guy so that the light doesn't bother him when I'm up late reading, haha. Thankfully I'm a pretty fast reader too, so I can usually keep up with my reading goals!
